I have a Crate 120w ss guitar amp, and the speakers are nothing but junk. Will they sound better if I have them reconed? Or are new (good speakers) just as cheap?
On second thought, would bass amp speakers be a valid option? And turn it into a psuedo bass amp. Kind of like a sows ear into a silk purse. |

Reconing crummy speakers would probably be a waste of money and time. You could spend between 100-200 dollars on a good used black widow or JBL, but I think you'd be much better off buying a used steel amp right here on the forum for as little as 250 bucks with a good speaker already in it. There's almost always a good deal on a peavey combo on the forum, and often with tone mods. We're very lucky in that way. |

In fact, there's a screaming deal for a Session 400 right now under Amplifiers for Sale.

I have a Crate G60 SS, and I had a blown (early Celestion Greenback in it) speaker. I replaced it with a Weber G12M70(4 OHM). You might want to give Weber Speakers a look! I have nothing but Weber Speakers now, including 2 x12" Webers in an early SS Traynor TS100. If I want to try to get some tubey sound, I use a Butler Tube Driver(with either 12AX7 or a 12AT7 or a 12AU7-interchangeable). Each to his own IMHO "to thine own self be true" _________________ "Steel players are like fine wine, we get better with age" |

Depends a lot on your budget eh? If it was me, I'd put that crate on Craigs List for some kid cheap and do as others have suggested and get a real amp.
If you insist on rescuing the Crate I'd go more for the Weber Californian. It's a JBL D120 or D130 copy and a darned good one I've heard.
I'm so hung up on tubes and able to build my own gear so that's what I'd be doing but if that weren't possible there seems to be almost universal acclaim for the Nashville 112 by Peavy. _________________ The Last of the World's Great Human Beings. Just to clarify, I am not looking for a steel amp IMHO I have 2 excellent steel amps. I want to record some of my own stuff, and I want to use a real bass, so I bought a cheap used bass. I don't have a bass amp so I thought maybe the Crate might work, but noooooooooo, it is more worthless than my exwife. So I thought putting bass speakers in the Crate might work. Since I am going straight into the board, I don't really even need an amp, but might be nice to have around. _________________ Williams S-12,Nashville-112, VK 100 head/Justice 15" BW speaker cab, Peavey Pro-Fex II,5 guitars and a banjo |

I don't think so Delvin. It's a loosing proposition. The tone stack would have completely different values on a bass amp. Look for a Gallien-Krueger head of some sort and check out Emenence speakers. They have a 10" bass driver that's killer in groups of four. Or one of Webers 15" Bass speakers in a build it yourself cab. I think there are Gallien-Krueger combos too. Then we're back into the budget bit right?
Any way, I know a couple pro bass guys that like the G-K line. _________________ The Last of the World's Great Human Beings. Ok, well maybe one of the last. Oh alright then, a perfectly ordinary slacker. |
