I'm sure this has been discussed...
Did Jerry Byrd ever play a pedal steel on any recordings? He sure had the touch without pedals. Just curious.
Thanks,
RG

JERRY BYRD told me, he'd "NEVER TOUCHED a pedal steel".

He chose to remain with the non-pedal style that had made him famous. His playing style incorporated so many different playing techniques that he could almost sound like a violin or pedal steel, or BASS Fiddle. Finding NEW SOUNDS, was his secret for getting recording sessions.

For what it's worth, I have a photo of Jerry sitting behind my pedal steel from many years ago at the St. Louis show....One of my treasures from this man.

Ray was a good friend of Jerry's. If Jerry told Ray he'd never played a pedal steel you can bet your life he hadn't.

Jerry did have a Sho-Bud which looked like a pedal steel, but it was custom made for him without pedals.

Which begs the question, Bill, did Jerry TOUCH your pedal steel?

Okay Bill Stafford.......

Tell us all.... Did Jerry actually play a single tune on your pedal steel guitar, did he experiment playing on it, did he smash any pedals?

How 'bout the rest o'the story?

I'm sure Jerry would pose with a fan's instrument if he was asked to, as he seems to have done in this instance. He would probably have posed with your tuba if you asked him to. Laughing Bill never said that he played the instrument, and I don't see anything in his statement that would contradict Jerry saying that he never played a pedal steel.

This is almost like asking someone if they've ever test-driven an auto that they didn't actually buy! How important can it be? I've never smoked ‘pot’, but; only because I want to be able to say that I never did! That doesn't mean that I approve or disapprove of it!

TOM......thanks for giving us that short clip of Ken Marvin and Jerry Byrd. Jerry Byrd also was on Ernie Lee's session of "You Can't Pick A Rose in December" and each was totally different and quite an education when seeing exactly how he played it so differently with each artist.

THANKS for sharing that with us. Much appreciated!

It has been said that once Jerry was asked about going to pedals. He is alleged to have said something like :" When I put pedals on my guitar I will ride it out on the stage like a bycicle." Jody.

Actually, the solo I posted was taken from a recording by Ernie Ashworth.
Ray probably knows better than I whether Ernie Lee is the same person as Ernie Ashworth.
Here is a link to the whole song on YouTube.

You're on the ball Tom! Great!

My post was merely a TEST! You passed the test and I'm proud of you.

As you know, Ashworth and "Lee" are not related.

Notice the pedal-like sounds Byrd got in various spots in this recording.. He wasn't attempting to copy a pedal steel, merely trying to play tricks on the ears of all listeners........and trying to keep pace with the rapidly changing music market at that time. To do so meant more sessions and bigger/better pay days for him.

I've always thought that Emmons and Day had Jerry Byrd in mind when they developed the E9th tuning/copedent. Finding an easier way to get those smooth slants. Smile

I believe many years ago I read that Mr. Byrd allowed that the pedals were a gimmick whose time would pass.

In 1979 I was in St Louis For the Convention and Bill Stafford Introduced me to Jerry Byrd. While Jerry and I were making Small Talk, Jerry told me if he were ever to Play Pedal Steel it would be like Bill Stafford. He had immense respect for Mr Smooth.
Dunno if he ever tried pedals, but I know what I stated is a Fact.
