Wow, three steel guitars at once ripping up Purple Haze with The Roots. That was fun. Gotta be thirty-ish strings just up front...nice Sierra he was working on!

Probably be up on youtube soon enough.

I'm interested to hear the new Hendrix material that they're promoting on the show.

...and I missed it. I looked at the show for a minute, but didn't see that RR was listed. I'll try to find it on the tube.

edit:OK here 'tis from NBC.

http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/video/episodes/#vid=1212673

Notice: You'll have to wait for the entire show's video to load then watch a short commercial ad first. Scroll over to Chapter 5 for the RR video.

They flat nail the Hendrix sound....and when was the last time you saw 3 steel guitars on national TV at on time?

Well at least Jimmy Fallon didn't introduce him as a keyboardist so I guess we should be grateful.

Why so many strings on each guitar along with a lot of pedals and knee-levers, when they could do it all with just one or two strings each and no pedals or knee-levers at all? What am I missing? [SHOW appeal?]

That was great. I loved that. Especially seeing the guitar player sitting back and watching 3 steel players rocking that hard.

I've played with that lineup, and Darrick does seem to always come out on top by playing the least. Smile

It was 33 strings: 13 (Robert) + 12 (Chuck) plus 8 (Darrick).

yeah, that was great. but with 13 strings... what is his (Randolph) copedant? i thought i read somewhere that it was e7. In any case that was very inspiring.

Robert's copedent is very similar to Chuck Campbell's with the addition of a low G# string way down there. The Sacred Steel tuning is very similar to an E9th, when you take into account the typical pedals that are used. The main difference is the addition of a D string between the high B and E. When you lower that to a C# you have a pretty standard E13th tuning (like Buddy used on his 12 string).

b0b did a great analysis of the Sacred Steel tunings here: SS Tunings

His steel tech told me it was close to an ext E9 with a lever or pedal to raise the string 7 F# so he could strum.
