I started on a Marlen d10 a couple of years ago. I found the mechanics a challenge. Mine is 1966 so newer ones may not be so hard to deal with. Once I got used to the tricks of dealing with it I was ok. I don't think it would be my first choice to start now. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/jaclynjones

Lots of guitars, banjos, mandos and a Mullen G2-D10,PAC D10, 1966 Marlen D10,Line6 x3 Pro, Peavey Powerslide, Michael Kelly Dobro and a "Fox Vintage Amp" model 5F8A. Oh Yea, a very patient husband. |

Richard,
Watch Tony Arrowood on youtube. He is playing an all-pull model. Then you will have your answer

Richard,
If it has the all pull changer(like this), it's the one to get, this is not a Marlin guitar, but a Marlin changer...Bill

Richard, Yours is probabbly a 1994, and will likely have the all-pull system, and should be a great guitar--beginner or pro. My opinion. Got some pics?
I started on a singleneck Marlen. Great guitars. |

Got mine used in 80/81, an all pull. It is true, fast and doesn't break strings. I have owned fours steels, 2- S10s and 2- SD10s. It is the heaviest of the bunch, the cabinet is made of thicker wood. Great tone. The changer is unique in its design, very fast, faster then I'll ever be. Mine is a triple raise, double lower exactly like my newest steel, which is only a couple years old. It has a 3 pedals 4 knee levers, but could easily be a 3/5 or even 4/5 if I wanted to do the mods. If the Marlen you are looking at, is an all pull, hasn't been abused or hacked up(Modded), and if you can get it reasonably, I can not see how you could go wrong. It can take you a very long way down the steel guitar road.
Good luck,
Dick Sexton |

Me thinks this post was regarding the Marlen that was F/S on the evil-bait... It was pretty cheap and looked as if it were in good condition... Had a low BIN, under a grand...
It's not there any more... |

Same color and neck as mine. Ser# 1473891. Any one know how to date them from the ser#. Bought mine used as I said above, in 80/81. |

Dick; you read the serial number backwards and that gives you the year.

Thank you Ricky, I must surely have my dates mixed up badly. Could have sworn I got it in 81. Must have been 91 or at least late 80s, early 90s. It was like new and had been very well taken care of. Don't you just hate it when your cranial group lets you down.
That could mean I've been playing 10 years less then I thought. At this rate, with a 10 year break from steel, finding it in a ditch on the way to the gig, might not get such a good laugh. |
