Last week, after I posted a lesson on E-9th patterns played on strings 8-7-6, Rick Schmidt replied that the same scales can be played on E-9th strings 9-8-7 and “anywhere you can find two whole steps on either neck.”

E-9th > Key of A > 7th Fret > 9-8-7 strings = A – B – C# = two whole steps.
E-9th > Key of A > 5th Fret > 8-7-6 strings = A – B – C# = two whole steps.

Based on Rick's idea, here are some scale patterns on E-9th strings 9-8-7:

First Diagram: AM7 scale > picked in a 4 Note Forward Pattern > Ascending up the fretboard
Second Diagram: AM7 scale > picked in a 3 Note Forward Pattern > Ascending up the fretboard

Play over AM7 Chord

(E-9th Tuning - No Pedals - No Knee Levers)

First Diagram: Em7 Scale > picked in a 4 Note Forward Pattern > Ascending up the fretboard
Second Diagram: Em7 Scale > picked in a 3 Note Forward Pattern > Ascending up the fretboard

Play over A7 Chord

(E-9th Tuning - No Pedals - No Knee Levers)

Here are links diagramming E-9th Scales on strings 8-7-6:

After learning both scale positions, the next step would be to combine both positions for even more note choices.

A commercial application for these scale positions could be as lead in notes to your Mooney type roll-ups or as connecting notes between your E-9th pedal licks.
