This was brought up some in Mickey's D-12 Mullen thread, but I started this one to keep from polluting his.

I've played D-12s since the early 70s and have tried a few tuning variations. I tried Curly Chalker's low end and extended the top for a few years: A-G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-D-A. I also tried Buddy's "D in the middle" for a while: D-G-E-C-A-G-E-D-C-A-F-C.

The tuning I've had for the longest, and have now seems fairly popular: F-D-G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-C. The top strings are similar to the E9 chromatics.

I'm tempted to try a D on top, or outside, as Rick Schmidt and John McClung have done by going with 11 strings, however I hate to waste a string. Wink I've noticed that Reece tunes his non-pedal 12 string to D-B-G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-C. I'm guessing that he has the B because he doesn't have a knee lever to get that note with, so maybe putting the F or something else there might work better: D-F-G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F-C.

I'm interested to see what other people have tried, how it's working out, and any pros or cons for one way over another.

I'd like to see this thread developed, since I have a personal interest, but.. although I have nothing to add, from my experiences, I will note, that I've seen, a tuning chart from the 70's, showing a 12 string MSA, with 1 lever & 5 pedals tuned low to hi:
C F A C E G A C E G A F#. The lever lowered #5 C to B, and the pedals were standard.
Haven't tried it yet, as my top 2 strings continue to be F & D, which seems like a popular favorite.

Here's mine (bottom half of chart): <center>

I just stuck D strings between the C's and E's.
