(A quick search of the forum didn't turn anything up on this.)

I am baby-sitting (buddy-sitting?) a friend's 1974 Pro-II for a while. I have virtually no prior experience with a D-10, being a S-10 player except for a brief stint almost 30 years ago with a S-12 E9. I am finding the left knee levers to be quite uncomfortably placed to the right, putting my foot directly at the C pedal. In order to rock on and off the A pedal while keeping B down, one has to splay their left leg out at an unnatural angle. I find it to be very awkward. I looked at several undercarriages of D-10s in the for-sale section, and at numerous Youtube videos of folks playing D-10s, and this seems to be standard. (I even noticed that on his speed picking video Dick Meis seems to pivot his whole foot right past the B lever to play the A pedal independently--amidst some rather fabulous playing, I should add!)

Why?!? There is plenty of room to the left so that the foot would be (more logically, it seems to me) at about the B pedal. Every S-10 I've owned places the knees that way. I would think on a D-10 it would be even more advantageous to keep the left knees further leftward, to make more room for when one shifts one's leg over to the right to play C6.

What am I not getting???

Thanks,

Dumbfounded in Durham
(or maybe just dumb)

Hi Dan. I do not havd a D10, but have a LDG. I moved my LKL's 2 inches to the left, from where they were placed at the factory. I couldn't even rock my foot off of the B pedal, when I wanted to play my A pedal and the LKL. before I moved them, I measured exactly how far left I had to move them, to get my foot completely off the B pedal. Then drilled the holes and moved the LKL's. After they were moved, all I had to do is extend 2 rods, the 2 inches, and add a 10/32 rod coupling, and a 2" piece of 10/32 threaded rod I cut off of a long machine screw. The cost was less than $1. What a difference it makes.

Ronnie,

this is exactly what I would have to do with this Pro II if it were mine. I received one e-mail besides your post. I'm surprised no one has chimed in defending/explaining the rightward placement of the left levers; seems like there must be some good reason for it since nearly every D-10 I can find pics of has it this way. Anybody???

Dan

Dan...It may have something to do with the fact that on an S-10 the knees are mounted under the E-9 neck while on a D-10 they are located under the C-6 neck, which may necessitate placing the levers more to the right to avoid interfering with the additional hardware. I have noticed on most S-10 guitars there is a small "shelf" behind the neck (possibly providing more body space for lever placement options) while on a D-10 the rear neck is located fairly close to the apron... Disclaimer: The preceding information is pure conjecture on my part resulting from my observations and is not based on any building experience or scientific principle.
