Here's a video from the Beard Resonator Guitar Room - right across the hall from the Non-Pedal room. Howard Parker of Beard Guitars filmed this jam of 'Wabash Blues'.
It was a treat playing with my high school buddy (seriously) Howard Kalish and my new friends Gary Mortensen and Lyon.
Gerald Ross - Electric Ukulele
Howard Kalish - Fiddle
Gary Mortensen - Beard Reso Guitar
Lyon (?) - Harmonica

If you look closely when Howard pans by the door, you can see part of me in the frame. That was a fun song - I didn't remember the name of it. Howard Kalish is a great fiddler and a really nice guy.
Gary is a great player as well. That's one of the cool things about attending something like this - seeing people making great music because they enjoy it, not for the audience or the fame, but for the music.
Lyon (what's his last name?) played regular guitar, harmonica and clarinet in various jams. His duets with Rose Sinclair from Girl Howdy definitely had that Speedy West/Jimmy Bryant feeling down. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Sounded good! Get a bass player and take it on the road.
Howard, is that the new "no-frills" Beard E? Gary's playing is very nice, but he stayed away from the bass strings so I didn't get any sense of "bigness" to the sound of the dobro, but that might be the fault of the camcorder.
Gerald, what brand is the electric uke? That thing sounds great! _________________ Mark |

The uke was custom built for me by one of the world's greatest uke luthier - Dave Talsma. Here's his website: http://www.davetalsma.com/gallery.php
I have two Talsma ukes the electric one you see is in his custom uke gallery. My traditional tenor is in the traditional gallery.
They both have a MI-SI under saddle pickup. _________________ Gerald Ross

Yes Mark. You nailed it. It wasn't even a camcorder. It was the movie function of my digi still camera. That's a mahogany guitar and it sounds darn "large" in person (imho).

Hey...It's on my YouTube site as well. Gerald did add titles though. _________________ Howard Parker

The Beard No Frills model sounded great, and is everything you would expect a Beard to be. I played it, and it sounded so good, even with a beginner like me playing it, that I gave a lot of consideration to taking one home with me. It's just a good thing My husband had the credit card with him, and I didn't. |

Yeah, I spent a lot of time with that guitar. It's a very good instrument, with a sound like a regular acoustic guitar, but with the square neck for lap style playing. I think it's a great addition to a musician's arsenal of instruments, especially for the price.
I think this will be a great alternative to the cheapo Weissenborns, most of which don't sound that great. I'd rather play one of these than a Weissenborn in a group setting. Add a pickup and you'd be good to go!

Hey Jana, good to see you post here. And come around once in awhile on the Jerry Douglas BB - you've become too much of a stranger over there!
Brad, just like there are folks here that are mainly pedal steel players and dobros are a side deal, and they have no reason to invest the big dough into a "gourmet" level instrument, this Gold Tone Beard squareneck flattop looks to be just the ticket for those of us that are going to be playing dobro (or pedal or lap steel) the majority of the time. It will be a nice, pretty affordable alternative (and "change of pace") to a resonator.
Beard has been working on a high end, built-in-Maryland K-Model flattop squarenck, and Tim Scheerhorn has built some of the same in Tennessee, most notably for Rob Ickes, but I couldn't justify the price for myself from those high end luthiers, wouldn't use it enough.
And with this Gold Tone, as you commented, it's pretty simple to add a soundhole pickup for amplified playing without jumping through all the flaming hoops that are required for a properly installed Fishman Aura for a resonator guitar. _________________ Mark |

Hi Brad-
That harmonica player (and my guitar pickin' buddy) is Lyon Graulty. He is also a great sax and clarinet player, and yes, he sings, too!
That was a cool jam. |

My Beard Goldtone Maple Deluxe really barks and I've used on a ton of gigs and recordings. A real deal if you ask me. The 8-string version looks pretty tempting, is it a maple guitar as well? |
