I've had this unit for a few years now and am still in the 'do I want to keep this or find something more steel friendly?'
I recently broke it out and did some experimenting with different settings.
What I noticed was tonesuck going on; the tone was thinned out when the effect was on.
Brad Sarno told me he used it mainly for guitar; I don't know if he was implying that it worked better for six string as opposed to psg.
Could it be a impedence matching issue or...?
Usually the chain is:
17.5K Truetone>echodrive>pot pedal>SF Fender twin.Putting the Echodrive after the vp introduced some distotion to the sound.
The unit is the red pre-slam Echodrive, uses a 12AX7
with high voltage so the tube actually serves a purpose in it's circuit...
I have an earlier Black Box (no Vari-Z, etc.). Could inserting this into the signal chain be an improvement in this situation?.(also have a Hilton vp).

Joe.

though it's the older Blue analog one. Definitely put it last in your chain or into your send-return loop. If it is functioning correctly, it should make your tone BETTER by far. Try switching the tube. By the Way, I spoke with the designer of that pedal and he was insistent that the echodrive was always intended to use a AX7 tube, so while folks mess around with the varidrive and fatdrive tubes, the echodrive should stay an AX7. If you want to have it looked at, Rick Hamel will put it right. His email and address on SIBfx.com work. My last phone number for him was (858) 212-6484 but I know the SIBFX,com info is correct as I recently had him modify an old varidrive to be a two channel marvel.
