Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and this is maybe my 2nd post. I'm in Vancouver Canada
and it is near impossible to find a steel guitar let alone a Sho-Bud.
So I guess what I am looking for is someone
who is willing to sell and ship a Sho-Bud LDG
to Canada at a very reasonable price. I think recently
one went for 1800 on here and I would need a better
deal than that as I have to cover shipping and duty.

I've got a few emails. But it seems like the sellers are actually not following through? I'll give money to anyone who will ship a Sho-Bud LDG with a nice case to Vancouver BC Canada and who is asking for a reasonable amount.
Maybe we can discuss shipping as it is going to cost me an arm and a leg.

the amount of $1,800 is rather cheap for an LDG, so I hope but rather doubt you will get many responses if you want to buy one for less. This is possibly why the potential sellers are not following through. I haven't seen many LDG's go for less than $2,000. And the early roundfronts are being coveted at approx. $2,500. You also must consider taxes and brokerage at the border, which will run you well over $150 for a $1,500 guitar. (You do not pay duty because of the NAFTA agreement.) I've bought many steels from the USA and take it from me, you can add at least 15% for taxes and brokerage. Be prepared to go well over $2,000 for an LDG shipped to your door. Just thought I'd pass on my experience in this matter. Good luck.

Thanks for the response. There is one LDG on the forum here that went for 1800 just a few days ago. I know that type of opportunity comes once in a blue moon but I thought that maybe someone would understand my situation. I'm sure you share my anguish in just how difficult it is to get a pedal steel in Canada.
Have you mostly bought from the US? What type of pedal steels do you have? Do you know of any good Canadian resources for pedal steel? I've talked with Al Brisco but he doesn't carry Sho-buds.

Yes, I've mostly bought from the US, which makes that odd Canadian deal such sweet relief. Ha. Al sometimes gets used Sho~Buds in. You can keep checking his site. You should also contact Jeff Bradshaw in Alberta. He might be able to get you a decent used S10 in the $1,800 range, and shipping wouldn't be much at all across provinces. It might be worth the wait to snag a Canadian deal. They do come up.
A word about Sho~Buds. I've owned six of them in the past five years, and although some have been good, you are still dealing with a 30-year-old guitar or older. If you're just learning (my apologies if you're an experienced player), I'd recommend focusing on a newer brand. Just a suggestion. After all the 'Buds I've been through, I have fallen in love with a Fessenden S10 which sounds great, stays in tune, and doesn't give me any trouble. Don't limit yourself to one particular model of steel in your search. Sho~Buds demand good money sometimes because of their sound and not necessarily their reliability. I might get flamed for that statement, but since I got the Fessy I have not been underneath it once. That is a relief to me.

The deals are out there on LDG's. And Mullens, Emmons,Frankins, you name it!
Stay patient and my bet is someone will come to you!
I agree with some other posters some of the other guitars are very nice also.
Continue to check e-bay, be patient and you will have the LDG of your dreams!!!!!

for the info. I have actually contacted a few sellers but after a few emails
i stop hearing from them. It might be that they don't like that I am from
Canada. Or that they don't want to sell the pedal steels anymore? I have
had two people just kind of stop communications with me.
I don't get it? I am willing to give them money for their pedal steels.
Again, anyone who has a Sho-Bud LDG that stays in tune and a case,
and who is willing to ship to Canada - please contact me!

Has there been any talk on these emails about price? If not, then I guess the potential sellers aren't too serious. I've had that happen once or twice. Someone offers me a piece of equipment after I request it, and then they just disappear. People change their minds, and some people just have no email etiquette. Some people are just not on their email that much. Could be a bunch of things. Ideally, someone would contact you with an LDG and the price, and you'd accept it or turn it down. There's not much else to talk about besides shipping, and it just needs to be understood that you are taking all the fees into your hands once the steel is shipped from the US.
The right deal will come along soon enough, but I do believe that a few hundred dollars is all that's preventing you from getting your steel. You might wanna save up for a few more months and get what you want. If LDG's were to be had at deals, steel flippers would be requesting them here all the time and then just re-selling them on Ebay.

I must say it is very surprising as I have had numerous people
contact me offering to sell their Sho-Bud LDG's. I get to a certain
point in the discussion and I either don't hear from them or they
change they minds.
I'm finding it really difficult to find someone to sell to me.
I'm super excited to start playing. I just need a pedal steel to play! |

I feel for you, Andrew. Maybe they're lonely and just wanting to talk.
Al Brisco has a bunch of steels on his website now. He'll set you up with something. If you buy from Al you don't have to worry about brokerage, and the shipping would be cheaper. He does have a Sho~Bud but not LDG and it's over $1,800.

Hey Ken! I got the PM you meant to send to Andrew. Thanks for the kind words, though.  I agree that keeping it in Canada is easier in the long run. I wanna get a steel in Dallas this week because I can bring it back on the plane with me. Otherwise, I'd be holding out for a Canadian deal.

Hi Ken,
I appreciate the PM. I guess I am getting to know the Canadians on the forum. Knowing that there are Canadians on the board (who also play pedal steel) gives me assurance that it is indeed possible to own one one day and to start playing.
And also thanks to Chris for all of the info. I have been playing guitar for over 10 years but I have never even plugged in a pedal steel. I've seen the carter starter at the local music shop here but nothing worth writing home about.

I know there are some steel players in Vancouver, a few years ago I went to the Railway Club, and both bands that night had steel players. Last name of one of them was Rigby or Digby.
Are you set on an LDG? Would you consider other steels?...Jerry |

Hi Andrew,
I definitly suggest that you contact Al Brisco.
He has a massive inventory and tons of knowledge. He is a stand up guy that will get you started on the right foot.
As Cris says, a 30 year old 'Bud within your budget might be a great guitar, or not!! The later won't get you started at all
