Can't seem to tune the 5th string raise (B to C#) so that the C#'s on both the A pedal and C pedal raises are both in tune (pedals are Emmons setup). If the C pedal raise is in tune, the A pedal raise is a few cents flat. Looking for a little troubleshooting advice before I screw this up. Steel is an Emmons P/P S-10 Reissue. Thanks in advance.... |

This is a quote from the above article by John Lacy:
Set up First and Third Pedal
Another common difficulty arises with setting up the fifth string on the pedal 1 and pedal 3 on the E9 neck. Although they both hit the exact same note on this string, adjusting pedal 3 can be a frustrating task. For various reasons the amount of room available for adjusting the collar on string 5 is minute and very difficult to lock into. In general on pedal 3 you have to move the collar for string 5 minutely away from the bellcrank and tighten the screw. Turn the guitar over and check to see whether the string is reaching the correct pitch when raised. You may have to repeat this several times until it is correct. Further, as they both share the same tuning screw on the endplate, the only option you have is to manually adjust them with the above hit and miss method. Some guitars actually have a half-stop tuner installed on this pull which allows you to match notes exactly on both pedals thereby eliminating this source of frustration completely.
(this is just an excerpt. Please read the whole article!) |

That move is rather tricky. Since both pedals raise the string to the same note, you really don't need a
half-step tuner. What you do need, however, is a short piece of spring between the bellcrank and collar to take care of any difference between the two pulls. Make sure the spring isn't too long or the changer finger won't contact the tuning screw like it should. |

All fixed thanks to you, Steve, Erv, and Lynn.
Thanks for the link to John Lacy's site, Steve - lots of good stuff there. I printed it out and will keep it for future reference.
As for "lifetime warranty service", you can't beat Lynn Stafford. I bought this steel from a fellow who bought it from Lynn. Lynn called me at home to make sure it was set up correctly. Wow.
Can't say enough about the Forum...much appreciated guys - nice to know here in the wilds of NH I'm only a forum post away from help. |
