I just got the terrible news that Larry Orr passed away on Friday. Many may remember him as the steel guitarist with the Blue Ridge Quartet and Judy Lynn, also played with many west coast musicians.
He used to take me to gigs and let me set up beside him when I was maybe 15 or 16 years old. He would try to coach me on what, when and how to to play. I can only imagine the frustration I caused him, but he always smiled and told me how great I was doing. He was one of a kind.

Mike, this is terrible news. I read your post the other day about you getting to pick with Larry. And I thought. I how great it would to be see him and hear him pick. But as usual, life gets in the way of so many good intentions.

It just doesn't seem real. Larry, Rest in Peace my Friend. My sincere condolences to the family...Bobby

Larry played with great expression and feeling. He and the Blue Ridge Quartet came by the WWVA Jamboree while I was there (mid-1970s). He came up and introduced himself to me and we talked steel for quite a while. He demonstrated a couple of things that were simply beautiful, skillful playing.

He was a friendly, personable man. My condolences to his family.

There is a brief scene of Larry at the beginning of this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg9RuUT-2wk&feature=related
