Topic: Locking tuners on PSG |

I've concluded after years of use that locking tuners are the best option a guy can put on his stratocaster.
Provided the ends of the pegs don't touch I'm contemplating putting a set (actually two sets of three on a side, waste two) of Sperzel locking tuners on my PSG. The Sperzel has the locking knob on the gear end of the tuner, not the peg end.
Any comments? Thanks

On an S/SD-10, no problem. On a D-10 there are clearance issues between the E9th neck 10th string tuner, and the C6th first string tuner. At least on the guitars I measured. I talked to Bob Sperzel about his latest tuners that have no locking knob. We both thought they would work. Go here, and scroll down to "Sound Lok."

In my experience I don't think locking tuners will help much with a pedal steel. The stresses that pedal steel strings go through are very different from standard guitar. The difference in tuning from the locking tuners on keyless steels seems to be more from the reduction of string length from the nut to the tuning key.

Bob,
the good thing about locking tuners is that they eliminate a lot of winds around the post, and they are very handy for quick string changes. The fewer windings mean less slipping, quicker "settle-in" time, no windings binding against each other, etc.. |

| Hmmm---so put one on the 3'rd and 5'th strings and not worry about the rest? unless you have real acidic hands and need to change the strings weekly? |

I love them on this guitar, but I'm not using pedals, although I don't think there would be a problem.

Go to the Williams website. Locking tuners are one of the options on their keyed guitars.

Wilkinson EZ-Lok. "These feature string post holes drilled at 90 degrees from each other. Pull the string through one hole real tight, wrap 3/4 around hte post, pull tight through the other hole. Tune to pitch, cut the string- DONE."

Chas, did you order from Sperzel or have you found a dealer that actually stocks a variety? The sound lock mentioned in John B's post look very intersting but I've sure never seen them available locally.
The Wilkenson also sounds workable and I use their stuff on tele builds. Good stuff.
The problem I am having is that my tuning pegs are turning in their holes. Usually there is a locating pin or mounting screw to keep this from happining but it's either sheared off or otherwise missing from these standard Grovers.
I see no locking pin on the Sperzel. I'll write him and see what he says. Meanwhile I'll look into the Wilkenson too.

| Danny, I ordered them from Sperzel. I was at the NAMM show, that year, and they had them on display. Someone from the company gave me the number, that I've since lost, and I ordered them. The bass keys and the regular keys are supposed to be the same color. Someone over at annodize left the regulars in the bath longer. So be it, I was glad to get them. |
