Ronnie Milsap is playing near my town at the end of this month and I'm wondering if any of y'all know if he has a steeler in his road band?

He was here last year and had no steel player. He played for about an hour, hardly talked to the crowd, and left with no encore. The audience was not happy.

We opened for him at Billy Bobs a few weeks back and he had no steel but man what a great show. Band was killer and he sang his rear off.

I saw Ronnie in 08 at the WSM listener appreciation show at the Ryman. He was great and had a steel player that night and fiddle. He said he didn't normally carry either on the road. I think it is just Ronnie, guitar, bass, drums, and a synth keyboard player.

Ronnie was still awesome the night we heard him, but I couldn't hear the steel player very well. I don't konw if it was the mix or where we were sitting.

Just saw him last night. It would have been nice if he had a steel in his band, but he has some really good musicians and singers.

Boy, am I glad I didn't apply that 'no steel? I won 't watch' rule over the years.

I'd have missed James Taylor, Bruce Horsnby, Steely Dan and Ray Charles, to name a handful!

Ronnie Milsap is a great musician, and one of a handful of country artists I'd take the trouble to watch. He always has top-notch players in his band, but his singing and piano-playing are worth the price of admission on their own.

(I must say that I was delighted to see him at the London Palladium in 1974 when he supported Glen Campbell - he had a four-piece band that included Dickie Overby!)

Milsap needs steel. I love that stuff , but it needs steel.

I wouldnt boycot all shows without steel, but if the artist in question had steel as an integral part of their classic recordings? and they choose to now tour without it? I kinda do loose some of my enthusiasm for the show...its just not the same instrumentation, not the same band, and not the same music.
