Buck was out on the road with Lyle Lovett last I heard. You're absolutely correct about his steel playing...his CD "A Work in Progress" is excellent.

Hap, Buck has played an older red JCH for years.
As for the amp and effects I guess they vary as in most road players case.

The last time that I saw Buck playing live he was using a Peavey 112 amp.

Awesome player, but a really nice guy with it.

I first met Buck in 1985 or 6 when he was playing on the road for John Anderson. My band opened the show for them. He was a super picker back then too!! A great guy to boot!

Buck's CD is great and I really enjoyed hearing him at St Louis two years ago. I went to hear him with Lyle Lovett's big band here in Charlottesville a couple of years ago and all I can say is, what a criminal waste of musical talent! It was a huge band and you could tell there were lots of good players in the band and they were all basically just playing 60ish style folk songs!! He may have let them loose on one song but not nearly enough for all the talent on that stage. What a shame.

Very Happy Whoa! Whoa! Rolling Eyes

I , too , agree that Buck is a mighty fine steel player; I once lived in the area of New york where Buck came from; His Dad also played a really nice steel picker, in my opinion. We were both a couple of Week-End Warriors; played the area's nite spot circuit. I didn't even know his Daddy had a son whom played steel, until I joined the Steel Guitar Forum a couple of years ago. Since that time I purchased a copy of Buck's " Work In Progress " amd immediately fell in love with his fabulous talent. And Buck is one fine Grnt to have as a friend..Bernie Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Buck could put strings on a 2x4 and plug it into a ditch and amaze everyone,he plays with such ease and great tonal quality and some really fast well played single string passages that will knock your socks off.he is a really nice person also.if you ever get a chance to see him in person at a steel show or with Lyle Lovet,go.you won't regret it i assure you.

I am really honored that Buck is using one of the pedals I build. One of the most talented steel players I have ever seen, and I have seen them all.

Buck does use two N-112's. I see and speak with him every two or three weeks, over at ‘Steel Guitar Nashville’ and about a month ago he told me something I would have never guessed! He said he's been working with Lyle Lovett for the past 17-yrs.! That was a really big surprise to me!

I saw him with Lyle's Big Band at Red Rocks west of Denver a few years ago. He was using a NV1000 at that time. A great band, but it would've been good to hear more of Buck. Love his CD and looking forward to hearing more of him.

Like Bernie, I am also from Northern NY. I also have a vintage cassette recording of Buck before he was famous.I think he was around 16 at the time.He played with a band called Honkytonk Heart Band. He sounded pretty good even then.If he catches this thread, I might be able to get it copied and send it to him.

Thanks Hap, just saw this and I'm honored that you're enjoying the CD. To answer your question... it's hard to believe myself but I have been working with Lyle for almost 18 years and inspite of the "limited" role that he requires from us, we have established a long standing chemistry that I feel is not so common these days and Lyle treats us great. My tenure with him has been a great lesson in team play. My setup is pretty straight forward... a JCH thru a Peavey Profex_2, into one or sometimes two Peavey Nashville 112's. Thanks for asking. To Cliff Trent, thank you for bringing back some fond memories. To Gary Stevenson, my website has my email address if you want to contact me. Please send me all the "Vintage" recordings you have... we need to get them off the streets! Smile I apologize for not addressing everyone personally but I appreciate all of you and your kind words. What a nice way to start a Saturday morning.

Buck Reid is an amazing player! I remember first seeing him with "Mike White and the Slyter Bro's. Band in Mt.Clemens,Mi. @ the Hayloft lounge way back in the early 80's! What a great band! His playing blew me away! And still does! I also remember him doing a show my group played in Sterling Hts.,Mi. "Kansas City Southern"...also a great band. Buck used a twin on that show i am pretty sure.
Hey Buck! If you see this,do you remember the Ross Southern Band from them days? We ended having Rich Slyter play bass for us for a few years! I still keep in touch with him from time to time! And sad news about the loss of
Nick Baker! A great player and good friend!
Take care Buck! Your CD is awesome!!! Are you planning on St.Louis this year?

Tony, thank you also for bringing back some fun memories. Yes of course I remember the Ross Southern Band and talk to Rich once every few months or so. I too was saddened to hear of Nick's passing... he had a great sense of humor and made things fun. I don't know about St.Louis yet, it depends on our summer tour schedule but I do hope to make it! Thanks for the kudo's on the CD... take care.

What pickups does buck use on His JCH steel.
That has the most awesome tone I've ever heard
on a steel guitar. Are they single coil or humbuckers.
My Fessy has wallace truetones E9th 17'500 ohms'
C6th 17,900.I guess the JHC is built Like a ZUM.
I used to See Jimmy Crewford peeking under Bruces steels.Where does that tone come from .I sure need
advice to achieve that tone. Thanks Chuck

Buck's JCH and Lawrence pick ups play a part in his tone, but most of it comes from the man himself. I know this is an old post but I have to say that Buck's 'Work In Progress' CD is technically and production-wise in the top two or three steel albums of all time in my opinion. It just blows me away every time I listen to it. His picking is so clean - he can play blisteringly fast or play ballads with great soul and expression.

He really is as good as anyone I have ever seen or heard.

What Ken said.

Buck's CD, as well as Steve Palousek's 'Let The Games Begin' are two of the best-ever steel-guitar albums. I'm in awe of both these players, but their CDs are a cut above the pack in terms of production and execution.
