I remember saying once that I enjoyed posting without restraint "before the indictment" or "diagnosis"...
Well, for me it was the latter I guess..
I had a rough 2008 and now a much better 2009 with a good prognosis for extended life from escaped "PC". Lots of building things back and readying for the next round of Hormone Blockade to slow things down in a few months after a welcome year off of it.( Not the funnest drug trip I ever took. I'd put Androgen Deprivation Therapy drugs just below Thorazine for recreational enjoyment...)
At any rate, my life has refocused on immediate things and really trying to hone in on the most positive of things..
Here's a GREAT example of the exchanges I used to relish here on the Forum...
Not that they aren't still happening, but just maybe an example on how life changing curcumstances can change one's focus, and way of communicating./
I do OK, but I have to "manage" my daily stuff, and more often than not, walking the dog at the river takes it over arguing or even discussing things on the Forum. Second is plugging in my tele and going over some friendly Johnny A or Brent stuff.
I get a low level nagging stomach ache from scar tissue, or back strain, and know what women with either PMS/Menopause, or like people with Diverticulitis must go through. Oh it lifts, but it really puts a damper on happy stuff...
Enjoy.
I have.

Hey Eric
Glad to hear that 2009 was better for you and I hope that 2010 is better still. As a beginner steel player,I am very fascinated by the tuning threads that you have participated in. I have learned alot from you,David Doggett,Larry Bell,Maurice, and the other guys. It seems like everything has been said on the subject and it has been a great learning experience listening to you guys. Thank you
Its good to hear that you are focusing on the positive. I hope that you have many more posts on the forum left in you.
Regards

That's the spirit.
It's hard to think positive when you're not feeling well.
It's nice to know you're doing better.

Eric -- I don't have the time to read all of that, but I read enough to enjoy the great exchanges you were talking about. And, by the way, I agree with you completely. But I am tired of the discussion -- I've got more important things to do than try to persuade people to believe what their tuner tells them. It's good for laughs, but I have pedal steel playing to do... _________________ I give music lessons on several different instruments in Cambridge, NY (between Bennington, VT and Albany, NY). But my true love is pedal steel. I've been obsessed with steel since 1972; don't know anything I'd rather talk about... www.barryhyman.com |

if this dont bring back Doggett nothing will.
(and I hope he does come back)
Ive always enjoyed your posts Eric, even the super surly ones from years past, even when we are in total disgareement. as harsh as you are (were?) sometimes, I dont recall ever being offended or insulted by your posts...course I never tried to argue tuning or politics with you.
The tuning debate is for me a non-issue. I tune straight up and dont understand the rationale behind tuning any other way, nor the debate threads on the subject. I had one singer tell me i was one of the few steel players he had encountered who played n tune. I figured all the others he'd met before were ET (is that what not straight up is called? ET?)guys.
also I dont want to buy a new tuner
took a lesson from a pro and he told me to check it out. never did , never ebven tried it. maybe I should |

Ben,
Your "Straight Up" tuning method is Equal Temperment (ET). The other method you were referring to is probably some variation of Just Intonation (JI) adjusted to compensate for the different combinations of notes with various pedal/knee lever combinations.
I'm with you; I tune pretty much straight up ET A=440Hz. I'll use bar slants to sweeten a combination if it bothers me.
