A real good time was had by all at the L.A. Steel Jam last weekend. So thanks to Mike Perlowin for organizing it, Big Jim Baron and Frank Carter for the BIAB, Blackie Taylor for the P.A.,and also to the actual pro players there (you know who you are) who graciously put up with the rest of us knuckleheads.

What Peter Said; with thanks also to you Peter, for bringing some great sounding guitars, and for your gracious sharing of knowledge in response to my many questions about Emmons Push Pulls.

Forumites; You should have seen it. On Sunday, it was the "Black PP Emmons Gang" !!! There were three beautiful black PP Emmons's all in a row, all sounding like they should, all being played like they should. As a newbie, one of my primary objectives in going to the show both days, was to hear first hand, the "Emmons tone". And I sure did.

But there were other guitars that had wonderful tone also, and Peter helped set my mind at ease that, at least for a beginner, there are many other fine guitars that will give you outstanding tone, without having to get involved with the complexities of the Push Pull mechanisms.

Maybe some of the people who were taking a lot of pics at the Jam will post some.

Reed

Also, special thanks also to John McClung for bringing and running the projectors and Larry Bales for bringing and running the sound system.

But mostly thanks to everybody who showed up to make this year's jam a success. It was a great weekend.

Absolutely...It was a blast. I'll second the thanks to everyone, with a special tip of the hat to Mike. None of it would have happened without his efforts.
Here's to ya...

Wow, what a great weekend. It was great meeting Dennis and Peggy of the SWSGA, and thanks for all your kind words about my steel playing.

It's always such a pleasure to have two days to share licks with Jaydee and Frank Carter.... and the other LA players that I'd not met before like Skip... wow what a great touch and tone! ... and Ron Epperson (who actually liked my "Sailor's Horpipe" in the middle of "Back Home in Indiana" Smile ).

So nice to finally jam with my N. Cal colleague Stephen Silver (mighty fine, mighty fine), and the best part always for me, meeting the young, next gen. steel players... yes folks there's hope for the future Smile

To my close steel guitar bros, Jim Eaton and John McClung... you guys keep me going (and I'm sure the rest of SoCal feels the same way!!!).... and so nice to see Jim Palenscar again (this could have been called the "Left Coast Forward Knee Lever Convention" Smile ).

To sum up, thanks all you great LA steel pickers and lovers for inviting a NorCal mountain folk steel guy... and making me feel so at home.

Finally, thank you Mike, for always making it happen, no matter what!

I know I won't sleep for the next week, for hearing steel guitar riffs in my head Smile ... but ain't it grand! Smile

Another great weekend of Steel Guitar was had by all those who played or came to listen at the once a year tribal gathering also known as Perl-Jam!
The line up this year included Al Viscovo, John Groover McDuffy, Jay Leach, Dave Wren, Frank Carter, Jay Dee,Peter Freiberger, Chas Smith, Steve Silver, Blackie Taylor, Mike Perlowin, Big Jim Baron, John McClung and yours truely. Those are the names I can come up with right now as I close my eyes and try to go around the circle, if I missed you, please forgive me.
Thanks for a job well done to Mike for taking care of the details so we could all have 2 days of main-line steel guitar fixes! Jim & Frank, prop's for pushing all the buttons to keep the tracks running for us to play over! Larry Bales, nice job on those songs we got you to sing! John McClung thanks for that second projector so we all didn't have to crowd over to one side of the room to see the charts! LOL
I was very pleased to have the chance to hear my new-to-me Mullen S12 when you took her for a test drive on Sunday John.
All in all, it was a great weekend of seeing old friends, listening to lots of steel guitar playing and some great Mexican food!
I have to agree with the point of another thread about finding a new room to have the jam in next year. It has been fun all these years at El Arco Iris, but it has been hard on the ear's as well.
Can't wait for next year!!!!

Well David, that's YOUR fault. You left the state and stopped learning us how.

Come back, at least for next year's jam. We Miss you.
