Rack Systems

Never used any rack sytems, but thinking about it. Can some of you that use them give some advice on what you use such preamp, effects, reverb, etc. The models and combinations that work best.

There are a lot of combinations you could use as far as pre amp, power amp, effects, speakers, etc. One thing that might narrow your search a little is to decide if you want tube or solid state and how much you want to spend, The tube stuff gets perty expensive, SS is a little more affordable.
I use a Revelation tube pre amp, mosvalve SS power amp, TC electronics g-sharp effects, (reverb and Delay unit)with 2 Eminece powered cabnits.
2 places that would be a good start for pre amp and power amp is Sarno Music Solutions and Lemay electronics, thats the first ones i could think of, one is SS and the other is tube, and they are both great units. Good luck on your search, you should get a lot of replies on this.

If you want to learn about some good rack components, do a search for Herby Wallace on the Forum.
He was recently looking to buy some rack units.
I totally agree with his selection of preamp, amp, speakers and etc. The components he was asking for are the same ones I use in my rack.
If you can find some units designed by B.K. Butler and built by Tube Works, you're headed in the right direction. Very Happy

I had great luck with a Peavey ProFex II into various power amps, the tubeworks are nice for warm amplification. You can find ProFexes modded for batteryless operation and better headroom fairly cheaply to explore the rack system option. At the time I was in a band where I used a lot of time delay and modulation effects, and the ProFex made that very easy.

I'm really happy with the Walker Stereo Steel system I've been using. Fat, warm, and really consistent from venue to venue. Effects of your choice, depending on what you run in the loop.

I've kept a fairly simple rack for several years. Just has a Digitech 2112 in it for any combination of effects you'd ever want and a nice clean preamp; a Korg rack mounted tuner that you can read from Mars; and a Rack Rider power supply to give me clean power to every thing from the power amp to a coffee pot. The whole thing fits under an airplane seat.

Ditto about the Stereo Steel unit from Gerry Dog Walker. Also new entries from Telonics/John Lemay are exoiting as well as any of Brad Sarno's and TC Furlong's products- have a ball!!! I still like the MPX1 from Lexicon as the reverb/effects unit of choice.

Thanks for the ideas. I see I have lot of research yet to do. I would like to keep it as simple and light weight as possible. But you have given me a place to start.

I think the best way to go that uses the least space is using a Peavey Profex II for the processor/preamp, and then a Stewart world 1.2 for the power amp. this only takes up two rack spaces!

On the other hand, if space is not an issue, then I woud say use MB Studio preamp for preamp, a Lexicon MPX1 (non loop connection) for effects, and then to a Mosvalve 500 power amp.

I have also known many people to have a great sound playing only through a Boss RV3 pedal and a good ole Fender Amp.

Most people who use racks are really doing it so that they can control everything on the fly right beside them. That is why I have a rack system.
