Does anybody know how the U.S. club scene is out in Okinawa?
Any NCO, Officers`, VFW, A.L. clubs there with live country music?
After 9/11, is it possible for a non U.S./non military person to play with bands in these base/camp connected clubs, and if so, does anybody know whether there are some steel players out there?
I lived in Frankfurt, Germany in the 70´s and played these clubs, and while I`m not exactly moving to Okinawa tomorrow, I just wondered if there might be available gigs playing either bass or steel. |

| Many years ago I performed there on a D.O.D. (department of defense) tour in a country rock show band and played everywhere on the island you could play inside of one week. It's a lovely place to visit and touring the island by motorcycle is one vivid memory I have. Also,it has some of the best scuba diving I've ever experienced. I certainly wouldn't relocate there with playing music in mind however. If you do go,make sure you try the Habu snake sake. |

Steinar,My friend Tim Rogers lives there he plays in the Air Force band and has a left handed GFI and plays guitar either lefty or righty? it's something to see..If you can find him and mention my name he would probably get you in wherever he's playing.

| Steinar, what Michael said... I was there with a D.O.D. band in '95 and there were a bunch of military clubs. I assume there still are, although there's some downsizing going on. You might want to see if there was a way to contact a services entertainment officer for more info. |

a COLORD FRIEND a piano player, AND i PLAYED A LOT AT THE nco AND SERVICE Clubs in Fort Jackson SC. also played dances in Columbie Sc. Poor me Nan would get to dance with Billy and I was stuck behind the steel guitar.

Guys, thanks a lot for your replies regarding steel in Okinawa, - very useful.
My wife`s father was from that island, and I have just returned from a trip out there.
Beautiful island/s, nice people and quite different from mainland Japan.
Coming from wintery, 5 below Northern Norway, I started to think that perhaps Okinawa might be a place to spend some time.
Having snakephobia, I don`t think I`ll try Habu sake, Michael.
At the hotel, I saw a ricewine bottle with a snake inside, and all health benefits aside, - not for me!
The guy playing the GFI, is he at Kadena, by the way?

Yeah, we may be closer to Thailand, which means that we`ll be regulars at your honky tonk bar in Hoa Hin.
Forgive me for straying off the topic, b0b, but for you unitiated, Steve plans on opening up a c & w honky bar in Hoa Hin, Thailand, and of course the accent will be on 4/4 shuffles and tons of steel, right, Steve??!!
So, once Steve gets settled in, that will be THE place to go!
And I trust your new Scranton ZB will also adorn the place. |

Steinar, you've left the cat out of the bag with the opening of the Hua Hin cub sometime in the future. Yes, there are plans for opening up a c & w honky bar in Hua Hin, Thailand, and of course the accent will be on 4/4 shuffles and tons of steel
What you forgot to say was that when you are in town, you will be playing the ZB Scranton, which will be in tip top playing condition via Paul Redmond's work. For good measure you will also be playing bass and steel simultaneously. Snake eating is optional.... lutefisk will be available.
The members will be informed when the Steinar show in sunny Thailand will kickoff. Thanks, stevet |
