How does one go about applying for Paypal ?

Go on www.paypal.com
There you will set up your account using your email and personal bank. This is a very secure method of paying and receiving payment. The do charge a small percentage but for me it's worth it.

I would set up a paypal account at a different bank -(not a different branch but a different brand) and not attach it to your personal account.
If there is a dispute, paypal can freeze your account and it may take longer than you hope to settle a dispute if one ever happens and that means you would not have access to your money.
This may be over-protective but why take a chance? I'm not knocking eBay or Paypal or those who like and use it; but It's good to be informed with reguard to anything attached or linked to your personal finances.

Just to clarify things...
Paypal may be able to freeze your account with them if some unforeseen problem occurs but they certainly cannot touch your actual bank account in that manner (at least not in my country). I consider using a separate bank account for Paypal transactions excellent advice.

I use it a lot and have done so for years.
Never had one single problem. (yet?)

I called a relative who is VP of a bank, and she says that PayPal can not lock up your bank account for any reason (only the bank or the government can do that). They (the bank) can (but probably won't) place a hold on the funds in question (if you transferred the funds from PayPal to your bank account), but nothing over that. That would be the case if YOU were the seller and screwed someone over with a bad transaction.
If you are the one who sent the money and it was taken from your account, then it is PayPal's problem to remedy the situation and should not even contact your bank.
Believe me, the bank doesn't give a rat's butt about your PayPal transactions. As long as you don't overdraw your account, they couldn't care less.

| My experience with paypal is that someone got my account with them and ordered a 200 dollar order that I got charged with. My bank worked with security at paypal and got the problem resolved. The party that ordered got the product. I didn't have to pay for the idems. My account was supposed to have been cancelled but wasn't at paypal. Bob |

Hacking your account is different. Did you file the complaint with the bank or PayPal? My bet is the only real involvement on the banks part was to let Paypal put money back into your account. PayPal has a very good fraud department to do the work, and I would bet they are the one's who took care of everything.

It's good you got the Police involved. Is anything going to happen to the jerk who hacked you? If he received the order, they must know where to find him. Of course, $200 probably isn't going to get action.

You've got a point there Per, but it has saved me money on international transactions anyway. Banks aren't exactly shy either you know. At least not then it comes to fees 
Another advantage is that the funds arrive to the reciever the exact moment you push the "send" button.
I just cant understand why, in the days of hyper modern, electronic cyber-banking, it still takes days for the money to arrive at the recieving bank while they dissappear from my account right away.

That's because the poor bankers need to make a little extra money on a couple of days' interest. Surely you don't begrudge them that? 
Form a purely technical point of view, same-day transfers were perfectly possible even back in the days when I was in banking myself, which was the late eighties. |

Been using PayPal for a long time with no problems. Was a seller on Ebay and the percentage for paypal use was 3%. I also have a store and the bank charges me 4% for using a credit card machine.
Using paypal allows sellers to collect credit card payments without haveing a merchants account. Using Paypal to pay for an item you purchased helps you if you don't get what you thought you were getting. They call it buyer protection. I've had to use that and it worked well.
