There was a post a while back for a company that would sell small quantity/short pieces of aluminum stock.
A name/website link would be much appreciated,looking for 7075 1/4"X1" bar stock.

There is another one. I have used these guys and 'onlinemetals'. Possibly 'Speedy' have it on delivery costs but only by pennies. Won't say for sure that any of them have what you want but give them an eyeball.

I have bought several small pieces from ebay. I have bought from speedy and online metals as well as others. Might cost more but I live out in the sticks and it is easier and takes less time . I just type in the size and aluminum and see what comes up. Most list the 6061 but they also say that if you don't see what you need email them. Scott

Thanks for all the replies, I think probably will have to get wide stock and machine to size, Yarde maybe has the closest to what needed. I found the 6061 in the size needed, but would like a harder grade.

Thanks to a friend that emailed me a link to Mcmaster Carr, I found exactly what I needed. I had looked there, but just didn't look deep enough, even gave me the stock #,page 3615... Thanks again to all.

Online Metals.com just recently opened another warehouse in Ohio in an effort to cut back on shipping costs. Their main warehouse is in the state of Washington and shipping used to take about two extra days to the midwest. The last order I received from them came from the Ohio facility and only took two days. The great advantage to dealing with these folks is the fact that you can order anything in one-foot increments, so you're not stuck buying a lot of material you really don't need. They also sell their "cut-offs" as random lengths if you need a piece under one foot long. They are also incrementally adding sizes to their 2024 and 7075 stock lists, and surprisingly, the costs of the tougher alloys is very little more than the 6061 material.

Although Lowes and Home Depot and Ace hardware and such, do carry aluminum stock, but the unknown alloy is pretty soft, it gums up when you machine it, costs more than it should, and it doesn't sound good when you tap on it. It sounds even worse when you go to the trouble to machine a lapsteel bridge from it (don't ask ).
Save yourself the disappointment and buy metal from someone who knows metal, if you're expecting good results in a critical application. |

| Also, try Production Tool in Detroit. Dont' have a phone number, but they have just about anything that you can want. Also, most sheet alum. is alloy 4043, which is soft. Most extruded is alloy 6061. I don't machine aluminum, but use a lot of it, so I can't answer your question about which alloy machines the best. The only problem with Lowe's and Home Depot is the price. WOW are they expensive on that sort of stuff, but if you just need a piece or two, then it is worth the price and you don't have to pay shipping charges. |
