Are there any country singers that made you want to reach for the radio and shut it off? Here are a few that I just couldn't listen to for any great length of time:
Male vocalists: Webb Pierce, Conway Twitty, Dwight Yoakum, John Anderson.
Female vocalists: Dolly Parton, Paulette Carlson, Alison Krauss, Jeannie Kendall.
It's not the music that bothered me - I just didn't like the sound of their voices. _________________ Sho-Bud Pro III + Marshall JMP 2204 half stack = good grind! |

I like their voices, but their music is questionable. |

I'm not a country guitarist but I do like country music.
I could mention the names of some rock and pop singers that made me want to turn the radio off too:
Male vocalists: Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Ric Ocasek (The Cars), Rod Stewart (when he sings ballads), Gerry Beckley (America).
Female vocalists: Ann Wilson (Heart), Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion, Olivia Newton-John. _________________ Sho-Bud Pro III + Marshall JMP 2204 half stack = good grind! |

Alison Krauss is great on the fiddle. But her voice is too high-pitched for my liking. That doesn't mean she isn't a good singer. She hits all the notes in tune and harmonizes well with her male background singers.
All of the singers I mentioned are quite talented at what they do. I just don't like to listen to them. Some voices sound pleasing to my ears while others don't, and when I say that I am not criticizing a singer's talent or his/her style of music.
If I were just as famous, I'm sure there would be a lot of people who couldn't stand to listen to my voice. I highly doubt that there is such a thing as a singer or musician that everyone likes to listen to. _________________ Sho-Bud Pro III + Marshall JMP 2204 half stack = good grind! |

It's a matter of taste. I'm sure there must be one or two out there that don't like The Hag, if you can believe that! I'm sure everyone has a list of singers that will make them start pushing the preset buttons on the car radio. I won't give you my list or critique Leslie's, but I will say I never liked the so-called "King of Country Music's" (Roy Acuff) singing.
I've sort of turned of the commercial country FM and opt now for what I can find on SeriusXM. _________________ HagFan

I WILL AGREE, THAT MR ACUFF's VOICE WAS MORE THAN A LITTLE ABRASIVE.. BUT HE HAD MAJOR CONTROL OVER THE WAY BUSINESS WAS DONE IN NASHVILLE.. NOW THE BEAN-COUNTERS RUN EVERYTHING. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU HAVE TALENT, AS LONG AS YOU CAN TURN A PROFIT.. |

i hear you, leslie. it just made me realize what an opinionated old fart i am.
ms krauss and union station was just the group that made the biggest impression on me in the last decade. especially the 'live' cd set. this band hits their incredibly tight groove within the first beat of each song! i've never heard a better bunch of pickers..and vocal blend..and sensitivity.
conway is my favorite cliche honky tonk hard core country...aided of course by john hughey's incredible emotional enhancement.
dolly, aside from her visible embellishments, has come to mean to me the most sincere sweet loving persona of good human values.
i respect you, leslie, however for your unwavering stance on your angle of music. |

I can see how the quirkiness of John Anderson's vocals could rub some ears the wrong way, but that is precisely why I really like it. And I love how Conway over-emotes, more so than his actual voice. When he moans a lyric with that throaty urgency, I almost go off the road in hysterics. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars
