6500 for a Franklin D-10 in good or better condition is a fair market price. Mr Franklin told me my 81 D-10 is worth that range, or even more considering what some have offered him for a used one.
The economy has nothing to do with musical instruments in this category. |

I personally believe the economy has everything to do with musical instruments in this category. What makes this any different than a a treasured '59 Les Paul that isn't commanding the beyond ridiculous price that it did three years ago, and now they're only going for a ridiculous price?
Or a Scheerhorn resonator guitar that sits on ebay and the auction closes without a sale because the seller is asking the same price that they were selling for on the used market a few years ago, but now there are no takers?

You know... I just paid $5950 for a brand new 8x8 Mullen HWP G2. So $6500 for a true quality instrument doesn't faze me. Prices on pedal steels are pretty reasonable considering the product.
The old adage holds true.... an item is worth exactly what someone will pay for it.

| A National Tricone or 59 Les Paul sold for little money in their day but 75 years later are still perfect. A Franklin Guitar will prove to stand the same test of time. The first pedal steel Paul Sr. built is as good and the same as the one he's building right now. Tiffany Lamps, Frank Lloyd Wright chairs and even Franklin Guitars will prove to be the standards all others can only hope to achieve. |

| franklins are nice, but i think people are somehow misconstruing the actual value. if paul jr. didn't play them i doubt they would be much different value-wise than say jch's, zums, emmons etc. |

I think the value today is that Paul Sr is not building them anymore so this could be the reason, even though I have one and it still plays well and looks good after playing it since 1982.....Would not take the $6500 for mine.RS

| as for the old franklins being the same quality as the new one's...not so. a hot picker named junior mercer came by my house during his travels in the early 80s. he had one of paul's early black franklins. it worked fine i suppose, but was noticeably cruder underneath...one of the reasons i chose a zumsteel at the time ...not to mention better price and easier builder communication. i was considering a new legrande at the time also but couldn't even get ahold of anyone at emmons. the zum plays great and looks good 28 yrs later after heavy abuse. |

| I went by and played this guitar yesterday and it is very clean and seems to be in great mechanical shape. The E9 is set up just like PF's guitars, knees and all. I think it's about an '80 yr model. I don't know the fella selling it, but the guitar looked nice and sounded great in my opinion. |

not that it matters, but i think paul uses more than 8+7 now.

i just noticed when you hold your cursor on the individual emo's it tells you what you are allowed to use them for so there can be no individual interpretation necessary and no one needs to really have a brain or imagination or anything.

I really hate to say anything and know I'm going to get busted by some for saying this but I can't see $6000 for any steel guitar. I'm know for a fact the Mullen and Franklin are wonderful instruments but can't see that kind of money unless for a collection or something on that order. I think steel guitars should be around $2500(new) but I'm also the one that thinks a new Chevy Z71 should be about $15000. The economy is bad and things keep going up??? JMHO

Henry I do agree.I never paid that much when I bought mine but I only have one and I don't play out much anymore so it suits me just fine.I did play a single 10 Mullen the other day in Oceanside Ca and it played great too.I'm sure that they all play good now with the experience the new builders have today over what the older ones knew way back when.Lots of people want the old PP emmons but I have no desire to own one myself.Lots of people buy 2 or more guitars but I never could see someone owning more than 2 if they don't play out.Each to his own I say.RS

You are right Johan, supply and demand control prices for everything I guess. I realize that parts and labor have gone up which also pushes prices up for steels but they are still over priced. As far as the Franklin, yes you would be paying a premium for a collectors item, and will probably be worth much more later.
Ron, thanks for agreeing. I don't think I have $6000 tied up in all six of my steels and all are D-10's except for one Sho-Bud. I enjoy playing different instruments from time to time and like working on guitars, restoring them etc. You are so right Ron, to each his own. I rest my case.
