I always wanted to have a original Dobro made by the Dopera´s. After looking around for a long time I found this old dobro model 37 at R & F Charle´s guitar shop web site. The problem was that this guitar shop is located in Paris. So I asked my friend Pierre Bastide who lives in Paris to check that guitar for me. He posted a detailed report with pictures and I decided to buy it. Pierre was kind enough to take care of the instrument until a friend visiting Paris picked it up for me. It`s serial No. 8396 and has all orginal parts.

Congratulations, Martin. You sound great with that Dobro®! There definitely is something to those older models, a sound you don't get with the Scheerhorn, Clinesmith and Beard resophonic guitars.

For my taste in reso playing, Martin is about as good as ANYONE playing dobro today,,,and this just another example of his talent,,,,fantastic!!!!! What a lesson in reso playing!!!!

John, unless I'm mistaken Martin uses standard open G tuning:

1. D
2. B
3. G
4. D
5. B
6. G

Thanks for the tuning specs Martin and Brad.

Very nice playing Martin. I'd be interested in knowing how easy (or otherwise) it is to play this number in the key of C in open G.

As a newcomer to steel I'm wrestling with tuning and in case you didn't get to glance at my introductory post a few weeks ago, I'm an upside down leftie and have tuned my 6 stringer as follows: (L-H) Eb, F, A, C, D, F.

This tuning is for two reasons (1) I'm keen to be able to play New Orleans jazz standards which favour the 'brass' keys (F in particular) and (2) I notice that quite a few of the Western Swing tracks in my small collection are also played in these keys.

I'd be interested in experimenting with open G (having seen your video), but would need to be able to easily reach the minor, seventh, diminished and augmented chords. I'm unsure how this is achieved, however.

Lately I have managed to somewhat successfully slant on my F,A,C strings to to reach the Bb major chord from the 12th fret F major position...........if you can picture this??............so, if slanting is the way to go, with the open G tuning, it could be the answer for me. How about open F, instead of open G perhaps?

Any tips will be gratefully received.

thanks

john
