After a period of practical inactivity (except for bluegrass gigs), I've got two country steel/fiddle gigs this weekend.

The guy I'm working for said I might not care for their music because they do mostly traditional county and he mentioned Key's In The Mailbox, Lonesome 77203, and The Other Woman. He said they hadn't got around to learning the "new stuff".
Poor me, I'll just have to suffer through it I suppose. Laughing

What a shame Rick, that TWANG just don't cut it man! Why Theresa would have probably showed up to hear you guys, provided you could play some of that good stuff by Raschal Flatts, Keith Urban and of course my favorite Lady Antibellybutton. . . . . Whoa!

Mr. Rick,A word of advice,Leave your plastic cowboy hat at home,These guys sound like the REAL deal.I'm sure they would perfer you wear a Bailey,Justin, or Stetson. And a pair of JP's boots would add a nice touch also. I have a pair of JP's [THE FULL CROCODILE] Paid 6500.00 for them. Will rent them to you for 500.00 a night. If you mess up those Ray Price songs, don't WORRY. No one will notice, they will be looking at those BOOTS. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

Slow down guys. I'm not getting paid that much and I just spent $10 today on battery acid and axle grease to prepare my clothes for the stage.

Chris - I've got the moves down. I'm thinking about an instructional video "Stage Gymnastics for Country Players" I've already been to the zoo and some chicken houses to get ideas.

Bama - Do you have an extra Nudie suit laying around I could borrow?

Hey ! Watch it ! To play those numbers you are going to actually need to strap that Tele on and work to pull them off ! There are some excellent Brad tunes that the crowds love, young and old. I don't consider Brad new country as he has a very strong emphasis on the musicians, Steel, ( E9th and C6th) Fiddle's , Guitars...many bands don't play Brad tunes because they can't , plus his roots are traditional Country...

Anyway

sounds like a fun gig..I'm jealous..

Make some live recordings , lets hear the classics..

Mr. Tony,I agree with you about Mr. Brad,I've always liked an artist that can sing AND pick. Mr. Rick I don't lend my Nudie suit to ANYBODY. Maybe you could work out a deal with the museum next to the opry house to borry one,My favorite is Marty Robbin's Pink one,and one of his cars to ride to the gig in.Talk about walking in HIGH cotton. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

Tony,

That's easy for you to say because you've never heard me do my electric autoharp gig with Barcus Berry pickup and run through a phaser and some really nasty distortion. I've brought many a grown man to his knees with that.Laughing Of course, if I could smoke the neck out of a Tele like you can, it would not even be an issue. It just ain't in me to be able to do that. I'm too old and set in my ways I suppose.

Bama,

You're a real friend. I get a good gig and you won't loan me your Nudie suit. Dickens offered to loan me one of his, but I could only do the Stringbean deal with that. I'll be okay this time. That battery acid and axle grease fixed my jeans and tee shirt up really nice. I'm going to wear sandals, but it's a little cold out, so I'll just change right before I go on stage.

I'll report back after the first gig tonight. Let's see, the gig's over at 11:00 so by the time I sign autographs, pictures, etc... I should be out of there by say, 11:05.

Mr. Rick,Just make SURE that T shirt is sleeve less like Mr Mcgraw or Mr. Chesney.Got to show those teenage girls your hairy arm pits,That drives them crazy. I'll make you a deal hire me to manage you [I'm not greedy, will work for ten grand a week].I will put your band together,I know a Les Paul player with a huge Marshall stack,A bass player that already has a mohawk [he will dye it any color you want].By April fools day I will have you back on the opry, only this time YOU will be the headliner. This summer we will put together a world wide tour. It will be the [RICK CAMPBELL TRIBUTE TO M.J. TOUR.] You will have to retire from your day gig,you won't have time for that anymore. But you will need to trade in your little Beechcraft for an up to date Lear.Got to be able to move FAAAAST. I will take care of everything for you. You won't need an expensive CPA,I will even take care of your money for you.[and me].I'm gonna call Willie Bob Davidson my cousin [and lawyer] as soon as he gets back from his weekly possom hunt to draw up our contract.I will send it so you can sign it by Monday. Will be nice working with you. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

Well I hesitate to post about it, but I had a running experience lately with a "new songs" country band.

I'll erase it soon enough..

First weekend, Fri next to a full stack of marshalls played thru by the guy that didn't get told I'd be replacing him. Across from the gal with her full stack and "auto tune les paul... rrrrrr...) Glad I brought my 400. Got 120 instead of the promised 200$ "because of the screwup" Sat, was abandoned onstage set three for an autistic guy they got out of the crowd to "front the band". No kidding.

Next weekend, I only had one stack of marshalls to contend with. Went better I guess. Thanks to the earplugs. AN "Agent" cane and saw a pretty sorry first set, and left.... Well, we got a surprise announcement that we had been SIGNED the next day. I was scratchng my head. Was told that we just had t get our "Bio Info" for a "Promo PAck" and record a "couple" CD tracks.... Oh boy. Got 140 out of 200 that weekend. "Signed"? I got to thinking.. he told them to get a promo together and maybe they could get some work in a few months.... That's what agents do..

Well I didn't want to break my NYE gig, so I played it with my regular band. Friday after noon I got a call cancelling the nights gig because the leader got "sick" and we'd be off for the next two weeks... I called and they said the band had got in a fight with the crowd and they were gone forever.... No work... Never called them on it..

This weekend, we were "scheduled for a video shoot" by the "management company"... I get a bulb on in my head and called.... I told them that I wouldn't be working for less than 140, and wouldn't be paying for any recording out of any wages, CD, Video, or otherwise.... Gave them the option of finding somebody that wanted to "go on the road"....

The took my advice and did. I waited til today to call and I hadn't planned on playing it anyhow really.... They got a "fiddle player that wants to "go on the road".... Smile I reminded them that I hadn't been paid right from the first night, that I knew the "got sick" thing was BS. And, to my credit, I did it in a happy friendly fashion...

It's really a slice from years of dealing with that kind of stuff as second nature.. and brings back some memories of when I had to depend on things like that...

My guess? I'm missing another battle royal, autistic front man, or maybe being handed 50$ at the end of the night tomorrow because of us chipping in on the "video shoot".. and then driving 50 miles a day for a week, cutting a "CD", and then chipping in another couple hundred bucks for the whole "package"... well maybe only once...

Actually it's like the "old times" more than I like to think..

I didn't like the "cover tunes" back in the 80s for the most part, and paid once or twice for band "promo packs"..

Out on the town tonight to check some things out as I'm only booked 2 weekends a month for a while.

Watch out. I'll work cheap, and I know "Hick Town", "Me and My Gang", "Swing Batter" and ""Honky Tonk Badonkadonk".. And I've got a Marshall Half Stack...

Maybe I'll find out where Ray is playing, and bring my old national alumagourd and my 3 watt Microcube, and play Red Sails in the Sunset, pay the band more than he's paying them.... and buy my own white slacks..

Wink

Well it was a good gig. Lots of country and a few Johnny Be Goods, Mustang Sally's, etc.. thrown in for the dancers. A few new country tunes like Boot Scootin Boogie, and The Chair. Lots of Price, Mel (Street and Tillis), some Vern, Gene, Jones, Wille, little Merle, Conway, Dudley, Warner Mack, Bill Mack, Hank, Cash, etc.... A Rodney Crowell tune called "Till I Can Gain Control Again" This is a good song.

Great quality band. I was able to play some fiddle tunes that reach beyond the "sawing" tunes like Cabbage and Old Joe.

Nothing to stack up with a Justin Trevino, Jake Hooker, Bobby Flores, Amber Digby, etc... show, but one of the more country things I've had the chance to play in awhile. I'm so rusty it was pathetic. Sad

Eric,

You can see Bama's going to be pretty busy with managing my career, but if he's willing, I'll share him with you and he'll put an end to all this foolishness that you've been experiencing. He'll take care of all that for you and he's the best. Kind of like your own personal bouncer/business manager with a NYC brain and a deep south attitude. Laughing
