Background clutter.............in those You Tube videos.

Have any of you that have posted on YOU Tube given any thought about cleaning up the background clutter in one's bedroom, living room, dining room, garage or where ever?

Minds tend to wander while they're being entertained.

One of my first attention grabbers is 'the clock on the wall'. WHAT TIME IS IT?

All the electrical/guitar cords that are strewn about and/or tangled up in and around the guitar doesn't seem to enhance the image of one's great musical contribution either.

It's kinda like looking at pix of attractive young ladies or 'girls'...... It's so easy to check the soles of the model's feet in an effort to determine if this is a low budget cheapo photo shoot (dirty feet) or is she really a high class girl?

One can get a very inexpensive SEAMLESS BACKDROP of neutral color that will eliminate the line in the background that seems to come out of the player's head-bone. Same goes for those distracting green leaved plants that also tend to appear to be growing out of the musician's head or ear or where ever. Likewise, those really dark black SHADOWS resulting in artificial light sources can also be a major distraction to any viewer.

Personally, I think it could help sell the MUSIC just a smidge better as even an amatuer could LOOK PROFESSIONAL What say you?

I thought that was the entire point of "amateur" videos. Being in your own environment with your own stuff. I never pay much attention to the things in the background if I'm watching and listening to the performance of a player. If things where to nice and neat I would think the video was to "Produced" and not a home video.

Just my opinion. Enjoy it. Play it through the first time, check out what his music room our whatever looks like. See what equipment he's using, or not. See what time he made the video, some of these players are real night owls. See if he was thinking, anybody would even watch, by how he presented himself. See if he was interrupted by a phone, kid, wife or pet. See if the video is broken up, looking like it was edited. One of the youtube videos I've enjoyed the most, was the one David Hartley had his dog dancing in. I can't even remember the name of the song, and don't really care, but I sure enjoyed Davids dog dancing to the music and remember that. If I need or want to know or check out the song, I'll find it.

Then on the first time through, if you heard or saw something of interest, play it again and focus...

"Life's short, be entertained."

Bob, I like seeing the entire player, as in your vids. It sorta brings it all together.

Ray, lots of videos on the Youtube, have been edited many, many times. Modern technology, makes it so you'd never be able to tell it, but you can bet it has, much like during a studio recording.

I personally, would like hearing them played without any edits, and let the mistakes come as they may or may not. I've yet to hear any player, that I haven't picked up on a bad something here or there, during live performances, at one time or another. I think that's called simply being human. Smile

I dont know if I'd go anywhere near as far as Ray, I never notice models feet, but yeah...a good photographic presentation will often involve less background clutter. I'm sure most making these videos dont care, I know i wouldnt, but if you DO care or are trying to make a professional product for sale, Rays tip is a valid one.

I think that if someone is being distracted by a clock on the wall or plants in the background, he or she is, most likely, not all that interested in the music that's being played or has Attention Deficit Disorder to some degree.

Personally, if the music is listenable at all, I have no problem focusing on the player and the performance. Conversely, if the music isn't listenable or of no interest to me, I simply move on to another video.

From the two images of you in your post above, I've learned two things. In the lower photo, the CD racks, the 4-shelf lawyer's bookcase, the piano bench, the non-standard steel guitar, and the various acoutrement of the room tells me that you're a man of wide musical taste and great erudition, a thinking man's steel guitarist.

The first photo tells me that Billy Jenkins really likes red. Wink
