Iām sure there is a political slant to a lot of music over the years .
I recall the 60ās and 70ās , a lot of music reflected the mood of the
people - I guess you would need to have a horse in the race to see
the current mood & the humor Ray put on it .
No offense meant to are north of the border brothers it ās just US |

I give We The People a minus 10 another bit of partisan lunacy. _________________ "The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over." |

Ray does a great version of "Misty' with Jay Dee Manness on pedal steel, and if you listen really close, 'The Streak" features a great steel part in the chorus. I love 'Everything Is Beautiful" and "Its Me Again Margaret" is just hilarious! At Christmas time, 'Santa Claus Is Watchin' You" is a great song to sing along to. I love 'Mississippi Squirrel' too. Ray's a great piano player too.

He is also the author of "Everything Is Beautiful".
This song has been recorded by many different artists.
BTW: I love his "Obamacare Video". |

Misty is my all time favorite Ray Stevens song. Jay Dee's steel is the best of the best and the interplay between steel and banjo is second to none. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

I think Bama was only speaking to the humorous side of the song, and Ray's funny faces, costumes, etc... I guess I too can see the humor in that, but the lyrics really disappoint me in Ray. This goes beyond humor. Even if I agreed with Ray I wouldn't want my views to be made public through the "country hick, hillbilly, type character that he presents. That really makes it weak, and gives the impression that people who support what he's saying are the uneducated and ignorant stereotypes.
Personally, I find Ray's "We The People" very disrespectful to our country. The American people have spoken and the majority elected the administration. If Ray, and others, don't approve vote them out, but for now that's what we've got. I don't see any useful purpose to try and make our country look stupid to the rest of the world. We should display some pride.
Merle Haggard - "If you don't love it leave it. Let this song that I'm singing be a warning. When you're running down our country hoss, you've walking on the fighting side of me."
I'm 50 and all I can remember hearing, (no matter who the president was), my entire life, is how bad the government is and how they're destroying our country, taking our tax money and wasting it, etc.... Yet, these same people give Lee Greenwood a standing ovation when he sings "I'm Proud To Be An American, Ain't No Doubt I Love This Land, God Bless The USA" If they do love the USA so much, maybe they shouldn't go around bad mouthing it all the time.???
If Ray is so down on the USA, maybe he should move somewhere else. I think he should have stuck with humor like The Streak and It's Me Again Margret. This old "I hate the government" dialog has been run into the ground years ago.
There's always the chance that Ray is smarter than it appears, and that he's using this to point out that the people who share this opinion of the government are typical of this character. It's up to everyone to decide that for themselves. I'm not pointing any fingers. I love American and I've got confidence in our leaders.
I'm surprised b0b allowed this song link to be posted. It can't get more political that this. he'll probably close this thread and I hope he does. This kind of disrespect for our country has no place on the steel guitar forum.

Rick,
It seems like YOU are the one making it political.
I guess Ray Stevens has the right (and the money) to produce anything he wishes.
We were promised change but not the kind we got. If the voters had to do it all over again, I bet the results would be different.
I love this Country but hate the direction it's going. |

Rick, all I can say is "you got eyes", nice post. Erv, Charlie made this political in the first place, your vote is still safe next time. If people disagree, then let them disagree, that is one of the founding principles of this country. Demanding that one opinion is right to the exclusion of all others has been tried many times in the past, in many ages and countries and always ended up with a whole lot of people being hurt in the process.
Peace to all...including 'Bama' Charlie.

Erv,
How do you figure I'm the one making it political? I didn't mention any political names. Did you listen to the song? That's where the political part is.
I don't have your crystal ball so I won't comment on the hypothetical election that's not taking place.
We can agree that we love America and look forward to better times. No wars, stock market good, plenty of jobs..... I liked that. We're a strong country and we'll come back, we've done it before.

I agree. Of course, b0b can't pre-screen posts.
Really, this entire topic is political. (Those who replied with references to Ray Stevens's non-political songs excepted, but they're actually off-topic.) Ray's "We the People" is not presented--by him--for its musical, or even linguistic, merit. |

A good point, and moderator Janice obviously agrees as she has locked the topic. _________________ -ššš- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
