It's a single finger pull-release. The changer finger moves forward to raise, and backward to lower. The shorter tuning nut holds the finger in the middle (neutral) position. When you have it it the case, work the left knee levers to see how it all happens.

what is the best order to tune it? i have been tuning open strings with the main tuners and the pedals with the hex nuts, and the knees with the black screws.
is this correct?

Hopefully Doug will get you an answer, (and correct anything I might get wrong) but in the mean time I have a Stageone, and this is how I tune it:
First I tune all open, then use the appropriate white hex keys for the pedals (tune pedals A and B while BOTH are depressed). Then C pedal..
then I tune Left-Left (raises 4-8 ) and Right-left (raises 1 and 7).
The three black screws are for tuning the Left-right lever (which lowers 4 and 8 ) and the Right-right lever (which lowers string 2) notice that they are for the Lowering levers only, and the three black screws correspond with strings 2, 4 and 8.
does that make sense?
(am I wrong, Doug?)
Anyway; I find it tunes up fairly easy and holds tune well. After I initially set my levers and pedals, I just have to tune my opens whenever I sit down at it, and all is well, without having to re-tune the levers and pedals. |

Karen,
John is correct in the recommended procedure, as described in page three of your manual.
If you are having trouble with the E strings it may be best to start from scratch. This is most easily done with the guitar upside down.
Check both of the left knee levers to make sure that the lever bracket, not the folding lever itself, is resting on the nylon stops in the at rest and engaged positions.
Turn the white hex nuts on strings 4 & 8 counter clockwise until the changer finger does not move when you activate the LKL lever or pedal C (3).
Check to see that the changer fingers for strings 4 & 8 are held in line with the other changer fingers. If not, adjust the short white hex nut (or maybe red, depending on the age of the guitar) accordingly.
Tune the strings to the correct pitch.
Tune pedal C (3)
Tune the LKL, the F lever, raising strings 4 & 8.
Tune the LKR, the D lever, lowering strings 4 & 8.
That should do it. Overtuning of the F lever or C pedal is easy to do and can foul things up pretty bad, so this is what we want to eliminate by starting fresh. It can happen on the most expensive pro guitars, too. A loose nylon hex nut is the only other problem I can think of.

yes that is what i meant with the levers. the levers that lower the string are controlled by the black screws.
It looks like I am doing it correctly then. thanks..

I tuned the Stage One Jeff Newman and I have tuned it straight up and it tunes either way very accurate.
IMHO the Stage One pull/release mech is as good as any all pull pro 3 pedal/4 knee E9 mech. |
