What are the differences between the Ace and the Academy Rickenbackers?

Near as I can tell, the Academy was first and had an exposed horseshoe magnet and morphed into the Ace with the magnet covered but the lines are blurred. I have seen Ace models with exposed magnets.
Same thing with back cover plates on the body.

Thanks John and Ray.

I have an Ace and I am very pleased with it but I just wondered what were the differences since when I have looked at pictures they often seemed the same to me. My Ace does have a bakelite guard over the horseshoe PU.

Thanks guys.

I think what John meant is sometimes they're the same and sometimes they're not.
My observations are the same as his.
