I have used Western Digital hard drives since their introduction. Western Digital has a no-nonsense warranty policy and excellent product support. For those who use Western Digital hard drives, there is a special edition of Acronis. This edition will not operate unless a Western Digital hard is connected to the system. The software is Version 9 and is free for the download. See the following link:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en
The software is offered for several different languages so take your pleasure. Acronis software permits backups in the form of disc images so everything is included. See the user manual (PDF) on the website at the above link. |

Robert:
Yeah, that is a good deal. I have it myself.
It doesn't have quite as many features as the paid for version, but I think it is more than enough for most users.
I think I saw in the documentation that you can use it to make an image of any drive brand, BUT, you can restore only to a Western Digital drive. That would make sense--the availability of the program in that case would induce a person to choose Western Digital when purchasing a new drive.
I think Seagate has a similar version of Acronis.
Another completely free option for imaging is Macrium Reflect Free edition. It has no hard drive brand-related restrictions. |

I have the paid version as well which I bought before I found this on Western Digital's site. Recently, I had a predicted failure on a 160GB drive and so I imaged that with Acronis Ver. 2010. I bought a 500GB drive from Buy.com. I moved an image from a 250BG drive to the new drive and restored the 160GB image to the 250GB drive. Now, the 250 is C: and the 500 is D: Since I have a great many picture images on the D:drive so that takes up considerable space. In addition, I have a C&W music collection that comprises nearly 5000 songs. Even though the music collection is MP3, they need considerable space as well. I back up both internal drives to a Western Digital external "Book" drive that connects via USB link. When I am not using the external drive, I turn off the external power supply so the drive does not appear in the system. |
