Topic: Shipping by Federal Express from San Francisco to UK |

What's your experience with Federal Express, I want your opinions and comments, the story will unfold in due course..
Would YOU ship a guitar from San Francisco to the UK using Federal Express, and how would you expect it to handled, also what would be the expected speed of the delivery ?
As I said the story will unfold with some surprising revelations..
The Instrument in question is :- A Fender 800 including case.
BTW the pedal board was positioned like this by the E-Bay seller ? And the picture is from BEFORE it was sent to me..
I have 3 pedals/rods cables and all the fittings required to make it a NINE pedal 800..
It will match my 9 pedal 1000, my 9 pedal 400 and my 8 pedal 3 knee lever PS-210.

| I would only send UPS insured for 5K. The insurance is $45 for 5K but what happens then is it is observed by a supervisor everytime the package is touched which means it arrives as it was packaged. That is the way I have done it ever since I got a Sho Bud dropped by a UPS low paid dock worker. Haven't had a problem since. I have a feelin you're going to have a good story to tell here. |

I will never ship anything fedex again.
How would I expect them to ship it?
I'd expect them to loose it first, then damage it, then deliver it to the wrong person, then say it wasnt packed correctly, then say they have no record of the shipment, then find it again, then I'd expect them to pick it up from the wrong person , hold it for a week, then redeliver it to the same wrong person they had just picked it up from again. While all this is happening I'd expect to talk to 12 different people, 8 of whioch were "managers", at fedex, none of which had any record of the previous conversations. Id expect to have to repeat my address 20 times and call the next day to find they STILL have it wrong. Finally I would expect to have to drive to the wrong persons house whom they delivered the item to for the third consecutive time , and retrieve the package myself only to find it completely ruined.
i dont think you could surprise me with whatever happened here, unless they delivered it successfully |

Well Ben, if that's been your experience with them you have my sympathies, but stand by for an incredible surprise..
Collected San Francisco 94107 @ PM on Tuesday 5th January 2010 delivered to Tamworth United Kingdom 9:30 AM Thursday 7th January 2010.
Unmarked and not so much as a scratch on the package let alone the guitar and case.. Incredible AND this wasn't their "Express" service that they offered at $200 extra..
Even more incredible, where I live is in the grips of snow storm, minus 10 degrees and black ice on the roads, yet the lady driver for Fedex seemed unperturbed by the road conditions and took it all in her stride.. |

| Mannnnnnnnnnn that is a horror story. Here is what I would do, stick with the insured amount. Here's the deal when they say it wasn't packaged right. THEY INSURED IT PACKAGED THAT WAY. That is the biggest cop out for them and UPS uses that same line. |

Im glad you had a better experience than me. It wasnt so much that they lost damaged and mis-delivered (3 times) my package ... It was the incompetant response that really sent me over the edge. I will say that before this I had always had reasonably good experiences with fedex and prefered them for international shipping over ups. But after speaking to those 'managers' and still getting the total shaft I cant go back to them again ever. |

Thanks b0b, it was all thanks to my "Brummie" friend in San Francisco, Alan Brookes..
The Seller wouldn't go outside the CONUS so Alan obliged and I will be eternally greatfull.
This one completes my collection of Fender guitars.
Well, as far as I want to go..
I have 3 pedals/rods cables and all the fittings required to make it a NINE pedal 800.
It will match my 9 pedal 1000, my 9 pedal 400 and my 8 pedal 3 knee lever PS-210.
It even came with the original cleaning cloth STILL Sealed in a bag and the Fender Screwdriver in a NEW condition. The case is as new and the locks function and I have the two keys..

wish I could find one that pretty, and Ben you and I are in the same boat with fedex I still have not got anything from them yet keep talking to all kinds of people though but the guitar is sitting here waiting to get paid for the damage

Bazil,
That guitar looks to be in mint condition. I'm glad it came through in such great shape for you.
I have no experience with one of these at all and I see in two views what looks like a lever on the top outside end of the changer, with a white knob on it. Just wondering what function it has?
I'm looking forward to hearing it played.  |

if you mean FedEx, then yes, i have used them on many occasions
US to Europa, within' Europa too
i've never had major probs w: them
cheaper & better than ups
now bax global is even cheaper & just as reliable
( one has to pick up the goods at the airport)
one must have an account w: them tho' to go
US postal is my favorite nevertheless if the goods are within weight & size limitations |

Well Danny, as for the guitar being played, maybe next week before I can get 'round to that because I have to make it a 9 pedal guitar like my other Fenders. But, as for the MUTE and how it sounds, this is from 1966 on my Fender 1000, the mute is on the intro and the middle section.

What a great rendition of the song "Lover". I remember Les Paul doing that years ago.
Your using the mute lever worked really well and was in good taste on that song.
I'm sure your latest addition to your Fender collection will sound equally as good once you get the pedals added and set up to your liking.  |

[1] Will the wide spindle have enough grooves for the additional cables ?
[2] Have you thought of adding knee levers ? |

Bazil, I know you must really like these Fenders, and they are beautiful and sound great.
I do have a couple more question, and that is how well do the cables hold up on these, and have you had any problem with them breaking? |

Alan the original pulley block had six grooves BUT in my box of goodies I found this alternative.
Danny I've NEVER had a cable break since I first bought a Fender 1000 in 1963, BUT I HAVE had a cable pull out of its soldered connection to the turn-buckle, but it's an EZ fix..

He put in his thumb, and pulled out a plum, and said, "What a good boy am I".  Your spares box never ceases to astonish me, Basil. If you said you'd looked into it and found a complete Emmons PSG that you'd forgotten you had I wouldn't be surprised.
Now what about knee levers. You could have them work in conjunction with the pedals, to give you the option of working a pedal or knee lever, which would allow you some interesting combinations. |

The story continues...
I was over visiting Basil last week and admiring his new Fender, when he brought my attention to a Fender D10 on eBay. Basil certainly has a nose for smelling out bargains. I bought it straightaway. It was delivered today. I haven't attached the pedals yet, but it's in great condition.
The bridge covers are missing, but I have a pair of bridge covers and mutes for this model. |
