I'm not sure, I could be totally wrong, but I think Leon McAuliff (sp?) did some playing for Porter on his show.
It feels like a geological age gone by since I've seen one of his shows. I may look on YouTube and see what they have on there for Porter. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

I just looked on YouTube for Leon McAuliffe and didn't see anything regarding Porter ... I definitely would have gotten that wrong as a trivia question. _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

Sometimes when Buck Trent played his Electric Banjo and turned the tuning keys it almost sounded like a early Pedal Steel. |

After about 6 or 7 years Don Warden quit Porter to be Dolly's manager (and still is).
So I got a call to go with Porter. I worked the Porter Wagoner Show until he disbanded to form the all girl band that he had for a while. I think I did about 5 of those that they show on RFD-TV. |

That is Don Warden (Dolly's uncle), who also sang a lot of harmony with Porter. I have always been fascinated by the way he'd pick up his steel by the handles and walk over close to the mic to sing a chorus at the "center mic" -- and then pick it up and walk away -- like a bluegrass Dobro player would do. If I remember right, he played one of the first Sho-Bud steels with tall stand-up legs and 2 pedals (sounds like A + B pedals). |

When Don Warden left Porter, Stu Basore joined the band. It was later when Porter formed the all girl band. Then his steel player was Lisa Tenpenny. _________________ Zumsteel steel guitars, Telonics and Peavey amplifiers, GHS strings. |

Watchin' Don play on those shows is like watchin' the very development of ShoBud guitars. One show the pedals, all 2 of them, would be at the keyhead end. Next show, by gum, they were at the changer end! Then back again! |

D Shubert, Don Warden is not Dolly's uncle. He was however her manager for years. |

Craig, I'd heard that uncle/niece story all my life...but just spent 5 minutes on the internet, and it looks like I'm wrong. |

Dolly's uncle, who was also her manager and songwriting partner when she first started out was Bill Owens. |

Excerpt from the Don Warden interview.I had always heard that Don got the first Sho-Bud, this confirms it. Bill
Don bought the first steel guitar made by the Sho-Bud company. The original Sho-Bud steel guitar that Don owned and played for many years is now on display at The Grand Ole Opry museum in Nashville, Tennessee. The Sho-Bud steel guitar is preferred by Don, and he still plays that brand of steel guitar today. _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

I'm sittin' here listening to "I thought I heard you calling my name". One of my favorites.
Then there's "Misery loves Company", "Sorrow on the Rocks" and "I've enjoyed as much of this...".
I grew up on those tunes.
Thanks Don. |

Back about 1964 I saw Porter record a "live" album called "Porter Wagoner In Person" at the high school in West Plains,Mo. Don was working for him at that time but on this particular show, Hal Rugg did the Steel work. Hal told me later that was one of his first professional jobs. Also at that time, Norma Jean was part of the show. Chet Atkins was doing the recording. Chet wasn't part of the live album but Porter had him come out on stage and play a couple songs before the recording. - Don |
