My guitar just starting making a sound like something was loose or rattling. To adjust the cone would I turn the screw a little either way?

Only about 10 degrees clockwise at a time till the rattle stops. If you think you went too far back it off till the rattle comes back, and retighten carefully. The ideal setting is just beyond the point where it rattles. All this assumes of course that the rattle is comming from the cone screw, and not the cover plate. Here are some basic techniques compliments of Stewart McDonald. clickhere
Look under setup/loading the cone.
You might also check www.reso-nation.org for more info.
Generally, I think you would just loosen the screw until you don't feel any tension on it, tighten it back until you do feel it contact, then turn 1/2 turn. This is what I do, then tweak it a little bit more or less to find the best tone.
Don't overtighten it whatever you do, if you collapse the cone, it is ruined. |

What Jerry says..
Lot's of things cause rattles in resonator guitars and sometimes they are a bear to track down. Call me if you have any questions. 301-733-8271

It just needed a slight tightening to remove that buzz. I didn't realize how small the hole is, had to use a jeweler's screwdriver to fit in.
thanks, Ron |
