I'm restoring a Guyatone D8 with no pedals for a customer. I haven't played any non-pedal in many, many years; I originally learned from a nearly blind guy on 6-string A6 tuning.
Can someone guide/recommend me tuings & strings (guages, sets, etc). Thanks in advance for sharing your preference(s) & wisdom. Regards, |

Steve,
A6 tuning is a very popular one for Western Swing players. Herb Remington has a lot of A6 learning material on his website.The tuning from low to hi is C#, E,F#,A,C#,E.
It happens to be my favorite tuning, but C6 tuning is by far the most popular(C,E,G,A,C,E) low to hi.You will find a lot more learning materials for C6.
You can experiment with both tunings, if you like. The same strings can be used and it only takes a minute or so to change tunings from C6 to A6.
The normal string gages are .14,.17,.21,.24,.30,.36

| Thanks, Morgan. But I think I confused part of my issue: this is a DOUBLE 8 stringer, i.e. two necks with 8 strings on each neck. Can I assume the other two strings would be LOWER? |

You're going to get a lot of different responses. That's part of the beauty of non-pedal steel: everyone customizes to his or her needs. For what ever (or what little) it's worth, on my triple-neck National the top's a B11 (great for chords), but the two I find most generally useful are A6 (bottom neck) and E13 (middle).
My A6 (which retunes easily to C6) is bottom-to-top: F# A C# E F# A C# E.
I use a standard set of ("low C6") Jagwires ordered from Bob: 46-42-34-30-24-22-17-14.
Middle neck (good for country, less swing-y things): D G# E F# G# B C# E.
Gauges (I special order a set from Bob): 60-56-38-32-26-18-17-12.
That should get you in the ballpark. |

One of our loyal FORUM EXPERTS recently touched on the subject and I tho't he mentioned that there is only ONE or TWO, GUITAR STRING Manufacturers?
Is THAT TRUE?
