I had the pleasure of doing a gig with Redd Volkaert last Sunday. It was a heck of a lot of fun. Redd is a great guitarist, and has quite a sense of humor. A lot of it dealing with food. Great guy and fun to work with. I play in a band here, and Redd's brother Chris is our drummer. One of, if not the best drummer I've ever worked with.

Red is a regular, or was, over at the Telecaster Forum. TDPRI I've exchanged pleasantrys with him on the forum but never met him. I know he's well loved over there.

I seem to recall he and a pedal steel guy doing a duet on vidio that was posted over there last year. Both of them sweating it out because it was all short notes you know? Fun to watch.

I met and got to spend some time with Redd a few years ago at the Emmenece Mo Trail ride. He was with Clinton Gregory. I knew Kevin Grant the Bass player and Big Jim Murphy, so I went early and met them at the motel, went to dinner and was back stage at the show. It was a ball and Redd is just an old country boy like the rest of us, with an accent Razz

I got to play with Redd a few times when he was here in the Bay Area at Cowtown. What a great player and one of the nicest guys on earth. With all the hoopla about his guitar playing, it's easy to overlook what a good singer he is.

I met Redd here in Lethbridge where I live back when he played in a band called Prairie Fire. He seemed like a real nice guy with a humble and easygoing manner.

A Canadian who knows and chooses to record Johnny Bush album cuts? Deep catalogue. Impressive.

There is some pretty funny writing on Redd's site: http://www.reddvolkaert.net/bio.html and http://www.reddvolkaert.net/news.php.

That's a link to the website for a band that Redd plays with around Austin. The Last Country Album CD has been discussed on the forum a time or two before, but not lately. It's great, besides Redd the players include Cindy Cashdollar and Tommy Detamore..

Redd is the "King Kong" of Tele. I watched him whenever I could while he was in Nashville.

There is a DVD available on Amazon called "Teletwang" that is over an hour of the finest music ever by Redd, The First Lady of Steel Guitar Cindy Cashdollar, drummer Chris Gilson, and bassist Nate Rowe at the Continental Club in Austin TX.

This DVD is the "Holy Grail" of Tele, Stringmaster, and lap IMHO. Excellent vocals by Redd, and as a bonus, a half an hour or so Tele lesson included.

It is a must have for any of you Tele, or Stringmaster nuts out there.

Redd and I are playing with Jerry Lightsey and Jody Meredith tonight at Artz Rib House (on South Lamar), from 7:30-9:30. All you Centex pickers come on out if you're not working... which is a very real and distinct possibility!! Laughing!!!

I'll have to check the credits at home, but if memory serves, Redd played on Merle's "Live at Billy Bob's Texas" CD's. If someone were to want to own just two Merle Haggard CD's, those would be the two I would recommend. Of course, I don't understand why anyone would only want two. Smile

I got to meet Redd at a Hag show once in Cincinnati.

Redd plays on a CD titled Live at Billy Bob's: Merle Haggard that was released in 1999 (Smith Music Group BBT5000). Killer album!

Redd's first, and IMO best, solo album is Telewacker. One thing that makes it stand out is that Jim Murphy is the steel player, and he tears it up!

Dale happy new year to you too. Hope your doing fine. It was fun, I played with Redd a couple of years ago at his mothers birthday party, and then again at his brother's wedding reception. It is always a lot of fun being on stage with Redd.

I did a Twangbangers tour with Redd, Bill Kirchen, Dallas Wayne and Bill's rhythm section Johnny & Jack. It was two weeks after 9/11 and quite horrific when we drove past the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. We were out for a month and recorded an album (that none of us were overly pleased with). However, we all had a gas and drove around the whole country starting in Seattle and ending up in Mpls. Redd is a hoot, and by far the best I've ever played with. He's got a whole bag of his own licks and plays with incredible touch and drive. For that tour he played through one of my Webb amps, totally clean, but punchy. Amazing sound.

A quick Redd story: One time I asked him how he got a certain lick. He said that he took an augmented chord and instead of repeating it every 4 frets, he repeated it every three frets.... You can't defense something like that!

There are two Hag "Live at Billy Bob's..." albums. The first, with Redd, is "Motor Cycle Cowboy" and the second is "Old Country Singer". I beleive the DVD jacket Joe posted is the latter.

I'd just assumed that Redd was on both. Thanks for the reminder and correction, Joe.

I believe "Motorcycle Cowboy" was the title later added to the CD I referred to (the song "Motorcycle Cowboy" is on it)--don't know if it was on the same label and/or same number.

Redd is a super human as well as a superhuman Tele master. I thoroughly enjoyed our beers and story swapping at last Winter's Museum gig with Cindy C.

Like he needs my endorsement, but I think Redd is a great musician. Telewacker kicks butt. I hear he's no stranger to the Sho-Bud pedal steel either Exclamation

Thanks for all the smoke!
I wish was my X was around to read this post.

John I had a blast as usual, playing with you in Ladner, especially strange in that
I had played that place when I was playing bass in my first country band at 14!

Joe Goldmark is a liar, and a great person and a fantastic steel player with all his own sound.

Jerry;
I love the steel guitar, its players and its sound so much so, I have always tried to emulate that fat,
clean, barky type single note sound that they can produce through a good amp,
though I have owned a few steels, but always to no avail
