Not a very good rhythym track i made but ok!
No, i'm not that good but this is one of the top thre songs on steel i love the most!
My wife which doesn't listen to country will sit and listen to me play this all day!

Its nice to hear your version of this song. Yes, I'd say you are well on your way with that left hand..... Also I saw a nice bar slant. You used the technique my teacher taught for perfecting the slants.

Hey Kenny that was great, them bar slants are so cool, I gotta get into them.
Hope you had a great Christmas, im currently in Texas recording on Georgettes new cd.
Nothing like turning up and playing as you go to songs ive never heard but hey its all a great lesson !!!

Funny thing on the bar slants because i learned watching you, Buddy, Lloyd and White mostly!
In the early days my daddy played lap steel and i also learned how he did it on a six string!
I started playin steel at 9 and i just turned 50!
I should play alot better but i will say that youtube does a number on tone and sound quality!
Also, wish i had the tab but i like learnin with my ear mostly!
I was a little nervous playin this because i knew you would see it and for me the best honor is that you took the time to make a comment! Means alot too me and thank you so much!

Billy, the only effects i use are:
Boss DD3 Delay set with just a split second delay at abot 5!
Line 6 Tone constructer pedal set a 5
That's it with a Nashville 400 reverb at 7!
Just two little pedals!

As you know I'm your number 1 critic:
1a. One who expresses a reasoned opinion on any matter especially involving a judgment of its value, truth, righteousness, beauty, or technique.
1b. One who engages often professionally in the analysis, evaluation, or appreciation of works of art or artistic performances.
2. One given to harsh or captious judgment.
That's because you are a good player, but you could be a great player! You have the potential, so I hate not telling you what I feel could help.
Yes, I know, while at the same time, putting myself on the line to be judged in fine print, whether or not my words are truth or fiction.  I say that because as of yet, not many on the forum have ever heard me play anything. "They're the lucky ones!"
I always enjoy giving you a listen. A very pretty song indeed!
Ok, here is what I hear in this slow piece. And, I think it's because you like to play the speedy single string style material most of the time. So in general, you're use to the quick "Left Hand Bar Moves" as you need to be on the fast material you play. It's therefore, you have trouble on the slower smoother tunes.
I did notice, this time, you had the backing track loud enough to hear it. That's a good improvement, otherwise, it makes one sound like they are indeed, doing a steel (only) solo. So that part was ok.
What I noticed that needs improving, is to get your slide movement transitions smoother, if not it takes away from how much better, you could have otherwise done on the same tune.
If you'll go back and listen to it, from the first moves up the scale, you'll hear where the sliding changes, are done too rigid and not a very smooth transition. Listen closely as to be a critic of yourself, while thinking you're hearing it from someone else playing the tune. I think then you'll (possibly) get what it is I'm hearing and seeing that's causing that. Mostly the timing between the knees and pedals coming together, as you make the slide transitions. Giving those slides a, womp, womp, womp sound, as opposed to a smooth subtle move/s.
The other thing I noticed was the over bar quivers on the higher fret positions. You were nearly covering one entire fret both above and below the fret you were sustaining on. Simply shorten those quivers up when you're on the higher frets, and it will do a lot more for you up there. "Yes it's hard to get out of old habits!" I know that, so work on those two areas of smoothing, and I do believe you will shoot right up there.
All said, you did an otherwise, real nice job on it.

Nope, doesn't bother me at all to have someone give an honest opinion and its up to me to use it or ignore it!
I will absolutly agree on the bar motion being a little wiggly! Let me say this, the youtube exagerates it even more so its not too bad but does need work!
You'll have to understand that for over 20 years of working with one band and not having a rhythym guitar and on a piano player that played fills and lead, i over played and would try to fill up the hole! This meaning that i held chords and bar wiggling took over!
I will spend more time on it as i also noticed it was a little excessive!
As for the transition moves, i really don't agree that they are not smooth simply because the video sound is edgy on youtube and IMHO it tends to make it sound more choppy than it should! But i'll take another look! 
Last i'll say that i post raw clips that have not been edited, adjusted and or anything to enhance the clip so its pretty much at the bottom of quality! NO EXCUSES, i know and i'm not giving any! 
This is all new too me and i think i will post some things i have done live that shows a totally different player and approach! When i do a clip its always over cooked and and a little toasted with no control or for that matter, any kind of conservative approach! Its called, flying by the seat of ya pants!!

Hey Kenny. Well first of all let me tell you my opinion on how you played. Nomber won, it were won uf tha purtiest songs I ever dun did heard. Really though, that was beautiful. When you posted the solo version of you playing the song, I tried to play it over and over but I couldn't, then you posted the videos on how to play it and now I can almost play it,,, but I can't do it justice like you have. Thanks for posting and keep posting more!!!!! Happy new year to you and you family!!! Hope you come to the Georgia convention more often.

You tube visuals are not accurately in sync with the sound on many instances.
Remember the Ray Price "soft Rain"video? Many people were even questioning the validity of it because Jimmy Days bar movements were visually behind the soundtrack as were RPs lips but it seemed to be more obvious with the steel. |
