Tonight's Grand Ole Opry featured Folk Artist Rebecka Lynn Howard. I suppose you could say she's good at what she does........but it definately ain't country with Fiddles & Steels like Kitty Wells & Norma Jean used to do. I wonder if these new Folk Artists' would know what a 4x4 shuffle is if you asked them.

The old timey and folk music was at the beginning of the opry,maybe history will repete it's self.Maybe 10 or 20 years from now it will evolve into REAL country and honky tonk again. Seems this [country ???] music today is running out of idea's same old,same old stuff over and over. I'm sick of these coca cola plastic cowboys singing about pickups and four wheelers, ready for some cheating songs,love songs,songs about Mama,the home place,and faithful old hound dogs.In other words songs about REAL life,instead of Bo-donk-a donk [what ever the hell that is]Batter, Batter,and ride a cowboy. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

| I have listened to two songs of hers, and I wouldn't call it folk music. I think in fomer times ('60's), there was a close relation of folk and country, Charlie Pride singing a song by Tom Paxton, Joan Baez recording in Nashville... |

Nick,
You're like me.......... a slow learner. I finally quit watching that stuff a long time ago. Several years ago my wife came downstairs to ask me if I knew the country music awards were on TV. I said yes, but I can watch Dick Van Dyke without getting pissed off. Then she said, whoever Ray Price is he's getting into the hall of fame. Bless her heart, she really didn't know. That was 1996. I had about enough back then.

Historically, that was what the Opry was all about: hillbilly music, Appalachian folk music, old time fiddling, and eventually bluegrass.

When they allowed honky-tonk (with electric guitars and drums), the Opry began to slide downhill. Honky-tonk was the transition between traditional country music and today's rock-driven 'new country' music.

I didn't see the show with Becky Lynn but she's been around a long time. She used to be one of my fav's.
No-one sang with more heart and soul than her. One of my all time favorite's is Forgive. I think she's produced by Toby Keith now.No doubt she's got buttons on her back now.

Uncle Jimmy Thompson an eighty year old fiddle player was the first STAR of the opry,But he was NOT the first one to play on WSM like many believe. Dr. Humphrey Bate's possom hunters and Uncle Dave Macon and fiddler Sid Harkreader were before him. Uncle Jimmy was asked to play when someone did,nt show up. He played an hour of fiddle tunes by himself. The phone call,letters, and telegraphs started pouring in for him.So all you fiddle players can brag your instrument was the first STAR of the opry. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

Is this the same country singer "Rebecca Lynn" from eastern Kentucky, the young singer/songwriter, who has been on the country charts for the past 12 years and has written hit songs for Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, and others, and was nominated for "Female Vocalist" and "song of the year" by the ACM's about 6 years ago??
Never new she's now a "Folk Singer", good for her as "Folk singers" have been a part of country music for a couple of hundred years longer than the steel guitar has!!

Maybe the first stars of the WSM Barn Dance, but not the first on the "Grand Ole Opry".
On December 8th, 1928 when Judge Hay said “For the past hour we have been listening to music taken largely from Grand Opera. From now on we will present the Grand OLE Opry.” The first song that night, on the newly named "Grand Ole Opry", was DeFord Bailey playing the "Pan American Blues" on HARMONICA.
So technically the first instrument played on The Grand Ole Opry was harmonica.

If I remember correctly Rebecca and Rhonda Vincent sang the old Louvin Brothers song "The Angels Rejoiced" on the Opry a few years ago. I don't know anything about her other stuff, but that was really good.
On the same show, Terry Clark and some guy, I can't remember who, sang the Louvin's "I Can't Keep You In Love With Me". Mike Johnson took an an outstanding steel break. I think Aubrey Haney was playing a fiddle I'd sold him a few weeks prior. It was 4/4 shuffle and a great performance. I recorded it, but the DVR hard drive went out and I lost it, much to my regret.

Yes, I've got the CD. On the Opry performance it was not Vince with Terry Clark. I think his name was Michael somebody maybe, I just can't remember, but it was good. Live was much better than the CD to me. |
