Hey y'all. I remember a steel player living in my home town (Wilmington, NC) in the 80's named Tommy Johnson. At the time he played a Sho-Bud Maverick and was really good. He was in another band than mine but we crossed paths a lot and he helped inspire me to take up the instrument.. He told me he used to work with Roy Clark around the Washington, DC area (The Rocket Club) earlier on and remembers jamming w/Buddy Emmons and other great players. I never learned where he cut his teeth so I thought I would float his name to see if any of you all knew him. Last I heard, he had an accident working on a car and cut off some fingers/tips on his right hand. _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |

Yes! I definitly remember Tommy Johnson. I was just starting on steel guitar in 1968, and he worked at a night club in Beltsville, Md. Called "The Tin Dipper"
He had a steel that someone made from Emmons parts. It had a brand logo on the front that said Capri, we laughed about the fact that the logo was made from the word Caprice from Chevrolet. The guy who made the guitar got the logo from the parts dept. at the Chevy dealership and took a hack saw and cut off the last two letters. I also remember he was a really good player and a hell of nice guy. He also had a day job working a man named Pete Potter who was also learning to play steel. I used to go and watch him play many nights, and I guess you could say he was a big inspiration for me too. Tommy Auldridge....... |

I remember Tommy Johnson well, he called me for steel parts last year, then I never heard from him again.
I met Tommy in Norfolk Va. in 1966, built him a Seymour steel guitar, which I just found (along with some others of the same brand)
It was a D-10 8-4, birdseye and walnut. Still looks good, I hope Tommy does too!

I've heard through the grapevine down here that Tommy is living in Conway, SC which is very close by where I work. After the holidays I am going to try to find him. Conway isn't a very big town and my contact source seems to think hes in the phone book there. Will update if I find anything out and with his permisssion. Merry Christmas y'all _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |

Tommy lived here in Kinston for a time. I used to go and watch him do his one man gig at the local Holiday Inn. He was a great player AND entertainer.
The guy who made the Capri guitar was Al Collins, a machinist for DuPont, whose shop was in Ayden, about 12 miles from here. I would hang out there and saw Tommy quite a bit. If anyone has a collection of old Country Song Roundup, there is a back cover ad for Capri in one of them. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

While at Emmons in the 90', Tommy was living in the Myrtle Beach area playing at a club called "The Beach Wagon". Club is still there but not sure if Tommy is playing. He came to the shop several times and is a great guy and player. |
