On my Rains SD10, the arm rest is Approx.1" lower than the strings.
My right hand arches slightly up-ward and my forearm does not lay flat on the arm rest.
If I adjust the seat up so the hand lays flat on the strings, then my forearm is barely on the arm rest.
I would think when the forearm lays flat on the arm rest, the hand should lay flat across the strings ?
Looking at David Hartleys Rains, it seems to have a beefed up arm rest ?
Should I beef up my arm rest a little ? _________________ steelguitarguy.com |

Everyone has his own technique, but I was taught that the forearms should be just about parallel to the floor (and, usually, parallel to the plane of the strings). I was also taught that the C6 neck on a D-10 or the pad on a S/D guitar should not contact the arms while playing the front neck. You don't want anything impeding the motion of your arms as you move the bar along the neck.
In fact, my new guitar
only has a 1/2" wooden back deck, upholstered with the usual leatherette material and no foam at all.
It is about 1/2" lower than the front neck. It's flat so if I put my bar there it won't fall off, and it's surprisingly comfortable when I do use it as an armrest.
Works great for me. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page

Richard,
I built 2 SD 10's recently. I made the pads to fit the order of the one guitar that went to England. These pads turned out to be about 5/8" thick. Too low for my liking.
The next one I build will be the same height as the E9th strings, minus 1/4"... like the step from E9th to C6th on a D10 _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Thanks for the thoughts fellas
I played a S-10 Bud & Emmons for 30 years or so,,never touched a SD-10 till last year when I purchased a Rains SD-10 from Gary Carpenter.
I love the Rains so I will adjust to the SD-10 neck one way or another _________________ steelguitarguy.com |
