You can go on U-Tube and see many child prodigies of other
instruments - guitar, violin...
I haven't seen a prodigy on the PSG and I'm sure there are some out there.
Anybody got any good videos or stories of some steel prodigies? Love to see it. |

There have been many but they all grew-some by now: Paul Franklin, Randy Beavers, Johnny Cox, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Barbara Mandrell, the list goes on and on of folks who were child prodigies on steel guitar. There are some really fine, young players out there right now too; whether they are 'prodigies' per se, I don't know.

There was a steel player,very good by the way,at the dallas show a few years ago.
On you tube somewhere he is playing steel while his ,really young brother is playing the piano.
I am hoping someone will help,and bring us a video of this amazing steel player.

I don't know about being a prodigy, but the young steel player on YouTube with his little brother on piano was my son. His name is Austin Stewart and he was 13 at the time and, Dalton, his little brother was 9. They are now 15 and 11.
I need to get some updated videos on YouTube, but have not had time. It's also hard to get a video good enough for YouTube, as the open air sound is bad, or someone flubs in the band or Austin flubs, etc.. and steel players on YouTube pick these things apart and can be cruel and who wants to put up with that.
Austin plays steel shows all across the country. He will be In AZ in Jan. and he is usually always in Dallas and St. Louis each year, as well as our local Kansas and Arkansas shows. He plays gigs with a local band called the Dulings and plays the Ft. Scott, Kansas Jamboree every Sat. night. We encourage him to keep his music a hobby and enjoy it.

I think, if I remember correctly, Sara Jory's first album was released when she was only 12 years old... Am I right on that? Also, if my memory is working, it was pretty darn good too!

Sarah was around 8 or 9 when I first started to teach her. While I don't know if the word prodigy is the right one to use, she nevertheless showed immense promise.

This is the best of the best! A few short years ago in Dallas I walked into the big hall and heard a very young man playing at warp speed and then slowed it down to something pretty. His name; "Jonathon Candler"!
His ability to play was just unbelieveable. And by the way, he is blind; but don't tell Jonathon that! To hear him play and to talk with him was a great
experience.
He does have a cd available; David Wright can tell you more about him......... |

Back in the 80's and early 90's I was working on a TV show in Saskatchewan Canada. We featured a lot of the Original Opry Stars and had a blast doing it. Around 89' a young kid started showing up with his Dad. He was full of questions as to how you do this or that. One day I asked him to sit behind my guitar and play. Well, in about 30 seconds I realized THIS kid was going to be great! His name is Randle Currie! I have also heard Johnathan Chandler and Austin Stewart in Dallas. Both great young players! Does my heart good!  |
