My Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease about the time Dad died, which was 6 years ago. About 18 months ago we moved Mom into a great "memory care" facility up in Austin, where my sister lives. Things were going well until this past Monday. She had her breakfast, but when it was time for lunch, she was not responsive to any outside stimulus. Her breathing was shallow and rapid and her pulse rate was elevated. She was unable to swallow food or liquid. By Tuesday, her blood pressure was dropping. We were concerned that Mom was going to slowly die over a week or two, which happens to so many folks with Alzheimer's.

I got the telephone call from my sister at 10:30 Tuesday night, telling me that Mom had died, quietly, peacefully, in her sleep. She was 87.

Thank you so much for your kind words, guys.

Walter, I think I may have mentioned this to you before. Both of my Mom's parents were immigrants from Austria. My grandfather's last name was Lazar. My grandmother's maiden name was Smutok. I don't know that either of those names are Austrian, though.

Lee; It's hard to let Mom's go but we know they're in a better place. From your description, she went much the same as my wife back on 9-11. My kid's mom lasted 8 days after she was confined to bed. Just the way she wanted. It's some comfort when you realize this. May you & the family have peace. Andy H.

My Heartfelt Condolences, Lee. On the day before your birthday, too. Terrible news. My Mum also had that same dreadful condition when I lost her.

Lee,

Unfortunately, Alzheimers Disease takes our loved ones piece by piece, as we helplessly stand by. I'm so sorry you had to endure this cruelty, and pray that your family will soon find peace.

So sorry Lee. I've always said that I think I would give up a year or two to get out easily. My mom had to suffer with ovarian cancer and did't make to that age, but my dad is 87 and still likes to drive the tractor and farm. I bet your mom had a good life.

I am so sorry Lee to jear of you losing your mother. I lost mine in February 2006 and it was the most gut wrenching thing I have ever been through. The pain and misery is something I will never forget. I also work in a nursing facuility and we have an Alzheimers Unit. Such a sad sight to see people who have no idea where they are and do not know who their loved ones are. My heart goes out to you and your family. Please be assured you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks again for all the nice notes and emails from everybody. We had a nice, small graveside funeral service for Mom yesterday morning. One of my cousins, who I haven't seen in years, drove down from the big city of Nordheim, Tx (population 323 back in 2000) to attend the funeral. It was fun catching up on old times. His Dad and my Dad were brothers.
