herb remington and his excellent sidemen (who I don’t THINK were the “beachcombers”--at least not the “beachcombers” I remember) wowing a throng of people at the recent katy,tx guitarfest…word has it that when herb was shown the venue, he demanded that all the carpet be ripped up before he took the stage…he held a crowd of about 40 spellbound for an hour drawing on his vast repertoire of such late-19th-century favorites as “moanaloahialeahahula” and running the gamut to the mid-20th-century “stompin’ at the savoy”…interspersed among these crowd-pleasers, he patiently--VERY patiently--answered , for what, the ten-millionth time?, such questions from the audience as “huh??,” “what is THAT??,” “tell me again how alvino rey did it?,” “can you play ‘maiden’s prayer' on that thing?,” and the ever-popular “why is it called a ‘steel guitar’?”…of particular interest to the group was his abbreviated “history of the steel guitar from 1450 to 1849,” during which he constantly denied that it was an eye-witness account…seriously, he mesmerized the crowd, who was very appreciative of his having driven all the way across houston to katy, and a good time was had by all…even herb…I think… _________________ ...honk if you've never seen an uzi fired out of a car window...
