I have been thinking of going from the flip to the stomp for the following reasons:
1) the stomp has a true bypass. You can leave it plugged in all the time...very convenient!! I currently use a black box which has a dedicated out to a tuner, however, when I need to do a quickie casual gig and want to take minimal equipment, a stomp would fit the scenario much better.
2) You can set the stomp on the floor and forget about it. Both my flip and VSII mount to the guitar legs. Gets to be a pain in the butt when you're in small spaces. I know one of these nights mines gonna get side swiped and it might be ugly. The mount is just another awkward piece of something to have to cart around too, if you use them as I do.
I always use ac pwr, so that's another necessary evil that they all have in common for me.
There's a stomp (newest version) locally for $100.....might be mine soon 
Depends on what your personal situation calls for.

Hi Karen,
there are some people (including myself) that have had noise issues with the Stroboflip, even when set to bypass.
The Strobostomp has a true bypass, that eliminates that noise.
I had the Flip first, liked it for the slightly larger display and the distinct function buttons ( on the stomp you have to scroll through menues with just two little knobs)
but after I couldn´t get rid of a slight annoying distortion when plugged in either in the parallel out of my volumepedal or in series in the signal line,
I gave it back and got the Stomp instead, the noise was gone!
Unlike the plastic housing of the Flip, It´s built like a tank and even has a good sounding XLR DI out, quite handy sometimes.
That was the right choice for me.
Both have different steel sweetening setups and several user programmable presets.
You might want to look at this thread and also this other one about the noise issues...

...by the way, I didn´t jump in on your tonebar thread, but I (don´t have big hands) use a 15/16" BJS Hughey bar and I LOVE IT! |

| Another nice feature of the "Strobostomp" is that it has a power out (the "Flip" does not) so it can be used to power all of your effects pedals with the addition of a daisy chain. |

does the strobostomp 2 come with a power supply ?
i cant seem to find out online. also any PSG dealers stock them, would like to support someone on the forum instead of musicians friend or guitar center.

| strobo flip. I never use a wall-wart--just batteries. Sue at Petersen Tuners removed a small redundent diode and made it a true bypass--took her 5 minutes. Also, the leg bracket works beautiful for me. You can position it out of the way if the stage is tight. The Stomp does not have wide enough parameters for steel guitar--it is ment for 6 string guitar. But that's just my take. I've owned the stomp, and quickly went to the flip, it's dedicated to pedal steel. |

Go with the strobo rack...it has big display, and is easy to use and to read. The unit does not cost too much more the the other units.
The level of quality of the engineering and design provides greater marginal utility than the other two units.

Sorry I'm kind of piggy-backing on this thread with my own spin-off question, but I was curious about something related. I just upgraded from the StroboStomp (1) to the StroboStomp 2, mainly because of its PSG tuning preset. Here's what I'm wondering, though - are the pedals and knee levers preset as well, or just the open strings? I haven't had enough time to play with it recently to figure it out on my own, so I'm taking the lazy route and asking y'all.
I mean, isn't it true that in tempered PSG tuning, the cent adjustments on, say, a D# on an open string 2 are different from that on an D# created by an E-lever-lower on strings 4 and 8? Or an open F# string versus a raised-via-C-pedal F#? |

interesting...maybe i should go with the flip. at the beginning or this thread people were more biased to the stomp. i would also like to us it for setting up guitars and basses. I already have a boss stompbox tuner that i use on stage for my guitars.

I just went to the Peterson web site & among the features for the strobostomp 2--it includes steel guitar settings. I guess the original didn't have steel settings. I too have been agonizing over which strobo-WHAT to get! I saw the stroboflip at a recent St. Louis Convention--it looked great & seemed to work great, but I'm not sure if I like it clipped to the guitar leg. The stroborack is absolutely beautiful, but I'd have to put it in a road case next to my rig--a lot of times we play on small stages, so that wouldn't work. The strobostomp has always bothered me because I've wondered if I could see the readings well enough from my seated position looking down on the floor. However, I wonder if they made the screen larger on the strobostomp 2? I'll have to check it out at the Guitar Center. Good luck! |

Hi Karen,
I've been using my stroboflip since 2006 and I love it.
It's used all the time in my studio for tuning everything.
I love having it on the leg of my steel all the time, and
have never had to use it with a power supply. It is still
working with the orginal battery that it came with, and I
use it everyday.

I have the flip...
if you'd have to bend down to mess with controls on the stomp, that'd be a deal breaker for me..
My only beef on the flip is that it'd nice if they had a spring clamp arrangement instead of having to turn a thumbscrew for attaching it... nitpicky, but I do find that a little annoying.  |

I like the Flip better than any tuner I have ever used. Batteries last a long time by turning it off when done tuning. Turns on instantly and I programmed mine to fire up on sweetened E-9 and it is ready to go to work. I can leave it on with my Rev and tune on the fly if I wish, but seldom have to do this. Jack
