| Then there is the issue of New Country Artist winner. Now I liked Hootie and the Blowfish but sure seemed a strange pick to me considering all the new "country" artists who didn't sell 18 million records?? |

The people making the programing decisions that are behind the use rock guitar instead of steel to appeal to certain markets are based in Houston Tx. Houston is where the whole Clearchannel/Live Nation strip mining of American music started and is still based. The corporate accountants are working from NYC but they don't make the decisions.
The companies that do the test marketing are based in Indiana and they report to a marketing company on the west coast. The people creating the actual music are in Nashville. If it makes you feel better to blame NYC for the state of country music go right ahead. But that concept is fundamentally ridiculous and offensive to the millions of people that love music and keep NYC the greatest place in America for live music. I live in Austin now and its a great place but it is not close to even Brooklyn when it comes to the quantity and quality of live music.

Bob,
All I can tell you is my good friend's experience. He does many of the interviews that you see. All his work orders come from NYC. And that's where his paychechs come from. |

Speaking of Rascal Flatts, they got slighted this year at CMA's. I think record sales should be part of it. Anyway,

Barry,
The basic answer to your question is rent. NYC is a very expensive place to live. To keep above water I had to play quite a bit of music I don't care for and I had to work literally constantly.
I got an opportunity of a lifetime to learn how to play real honky tonk music with a real deal artist. I took a gig as a road player and the band works out of Austin. Austin is a great place and I'm having a ball here.
