Nobody else sounds like Anita. She was instantly identifiable. The way she bent whole phrases and placed notes against the beat was unique. Sad to learn that she was high on heroin for her classic performance at Newport. Jazz is a tough life if you live it 24/7 the way some people did.

For beautiful control, feeling and emotional honesty it's damn hard to beat this performance by Eva Cassidy. The first time I've seen her on video.

Thanks for posting about Anita. Everybody should go to Youtube and check out her "Live In Tokyo, 1963" videos not only for her classic singing, but the way she knew how to present to an audience---the mannerisms, white gloves, etc.
For anyone who thought you could get away with using that stuff, it takes its toll:

Like Stu said, I doubt it. The same can be said for many other pop singers, also.
One other striking difference between the late, great Eva Cassidy and most, if not all current pop chanteuses is; Eva preferred "working the soil" to "working the audience". This is apparent by her rare recorded performances on YouTube, which show just how shy she was in front of her fans. It's sad to note that that same love of agrarian labor, and the exposure to the sun which goes along with it, was probably responsible for the skin cancer which took her life at age 33.
RIP, Eva.
Keep on pickin'!
