Great Site! Thanks for posting the link to it. Mike has been a hero of mine for a long time.
Back when I started losing interest in steel guitar around 1986, I found "You Can Be a Star" on TNN and Mike's cool playing really renewed my interest in steel guitar like never before. I even bought a red Mullen from Herby because Mike was playing that red Emmons push-pull. (I wish I had known about push-pulls back then!)
I remember the first song I heard him play on that show, it was "My Baby Thinks He's a Train." The singer (Tamara Jo?) was not that good, but wow, what playing!!!
I also remember him playing a very cool version of "Steel Guitar Rag" on the "Play it Again Nashville" show without any accompaniment. I wish I had recorded it.

Frank...Yep Mike was definitely a great player on "You Can Be A Star"...The entire band was hot...My buddy Les Singer was the guitar player...They both went on to work with Bill Anderson...Les is still with Bill...
