I've had my Carter about five years now and I usually play it some each day. Not like a working player but some each day. Today I took the Carter out of the case and was assembling the pedal rods and noticed some wear where the hook end attached to the pedal pull bar. How does that wear affect the pedal action? When do I start looking for metal wear and fatigue? Five years? Ten years?
Thanks in advance;

i wouldn't worry about it to much until you can feel something funny in the action, or you can see where wear is actually weakening a connection. i have a daily player zum that's almost 28 years old. i did turn around one connection where the hook end of the pedal rod goes through a hole in the connection point on the cross rod so that it didn't continue to wear that same spot on the hole, but i'm not sure how the carter hooks up. |

I'd check and lube it once or twice a year. Anything more is likely wasted effort unless you're playing at rodeos (or mostly outdoor gigs). |

Now would be a great time to lube it! I lubed mine when it was about 2 years old and it played much smoother than when it was new. It was starting to feel a little drag on some of pedals when I actuated them slowly. Here's what I did to mine and if you decide to do yours, let us know if it made any difference! The whole job will only take you a few minutes and it could reduce future wear that occurs as parts dry out.

I lube mine every 6 weeks or so if i play every day, you can just feel when the molucules are not there anymore!
Your steel should have enough adjustment to last 50 years ?? _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

My Franklin will be "29" next month. Everything "underneath" is still stock and the only thing that shows any wear is the pedals.
It's had very little lubrication, maybe once a year I'll hit the cross rod ends and the pedal mountings but not much more. The changer does get oiled about twice a year and the roller nuts get it about 4 times a year.
Considering a Pedal Steel Guitar is mostly mechanical, most are not "high maintenance". |

Forget about any ideas you may have about wearing out a Carter. If you maintain it as per instructions in the manual, you are never going to wear that thing out.
Even if you don't maintain it properly I doubt you will ever wear it out. _________________ John Drury
