Hey there guys,
I like the song People Are Crazy, it's catchy. Last night I heard the steel, it sounded like Paul Franklin, but there was not a steel player on the stage. So I'm guessing they used a track. But Brett if your out there who cut the steel on that song? _________________ ZumSteel SD-10 5-8, GFI Ultra SD-10 3+4, Goodrich V/P, Boss DD3, FenderFM, Vegas 400. What about the steel player for Jamey Johnson? It seemed like he was playing lap steel licks but his steel had pedals on it. Anybody know anything about this? |

What an insult by the industry itself to the steel guitar community. Using a sound track with steel but not having a steel player on stage. Why use a track anyway, is Billy's band not good enough for TV?
Out of the hundreds of thousands of people watching the show, both live and on TV. How many do you really think noticed that they heard steel, but there was not one on stage..... maybe a handful?
As much as I hate to say it, I don't think steel guitar is an important part of the music now. The days of featuring steel like Conway and John Hughey, are over. Look at Charlie Pride on Lawrence Welk,...he brought Lloyd with him.
I know this sounds bad for steel players, but I believe it to be true. I think Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, etc... would be just as successful without steel as they are with it. Yeah, they use steel on sessions, and some on the road, but the majority of fans don't connect with it.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think time will prove that I'm not. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Rick,as long as people buy the junk they are cutting now then steel guitar will fade away, thank God for people like Paul Franklin that makes steel guitar work in the junk they are putting out, older players like myself don't won't to play that garbage, distortion on a pedal steel is a shame to me,
well just my opinion..thanks

Welcome to the real world. Could all the demands made by so called "Steel Players" have anything to do with it? Everyone trying to sound like everyone else? You knew it was coming! Jay y. |

I don't know what you mean about the demands of steel players, but I don't think steel players are in a position to demand much of anything presently. I've said it before, there's a lot more good steel players than there is good music for them to play. A steel player with any attitude or dependability problems would be walking on thin ice, because there's some good player ready to take their job in a heartbeat.
Yes, Paul has the new country gig covered. He's such a great player, I only wish the music was the kind that featured him more. There's no doubt that he can hold his own in any style setting. I've been meaning to drop by the Station Inn to hear him and the guys, but my timing going through Nashville never works out right. I love multiple fiddles and steel guitar. I'm not much of a Texas Swing fan, but hearing Dawn Sears sing Sweet Memories would be worth the trip.
If Paul Franklin was there at the CMA anyway, wonder why they didn't get him to set up on stage with Billy, since it was his playing that they were using anyway? Maybe some kind of $$$ thing, can't appear with another entertainer agreements, etc.... that we're not priviledged to.
Oh well, so much for the current country music industry and their promoting steel guitar.
