I wondered the same thing - I thought that steel part was the best thing all night. (Well, okay - I may have missed stuff, because I was switching channels with TCM most of the time...) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Jamey Johnson. I couldn't tell. It may have been Eddie Long?? That's a guess though. I know he did some things with JJ. Definitely nice, whoever it was. |

Yep, "Cowboy" Eddie Long was playin' steel with Jamey Johnson tonight. You could tell it was him because if you looked real close, you could see his keyless BMI steel.

I HIGHLY recommend buying Jamie Johnsons CD. Being 45, and a lead guitar player for 30 years, I enjoy a fair amount of "new country" with all the rockin guitars HOWEVER, I LOVE the pedal steel and the Jamie Johnsons new CD is FULL of Pedal steel. I think there are 4 steel solos for every lead guitar solo. AND 3/4 of all songs either start with a 10 to 20 second steel intro, or outro (or both).
HIGHLY recommend this CD. ALSO, Jamie is an incredible song write and a damn good singer.
This guy has one hell of a story - look him up.

Cowboy did some excellent work last night. We were very proud of him! Jamey gives him an open door to play what he feels and boy he can play it.
Their next album will be released soon, and cowboy is allllllll over it......

I thought that might be Eddie. I had turned away from the tv when the first strains began and just turned back to catch a glimpse of his hair.
He had one of, if not the best, sounds on the show, and of course his playing is fabulous.
It had been a while since we heard much from him up until a couple years ago. I'm glad he's back and tearing it up again. |

I too thought it was the best steel played all night. Not only that - I thought it was the best sounding steel I heard all night and whatever it was I want one. |

Thanks for asking/answering this. I asked in another thread but didn't get an answer yet.
To my beginner ears, it sounded like he was playing some lap steel licks in there. Did I hear correctly? |

honestly, i thought it sounded indistinct and imprecise. the steel intro wasn't clear enough to set up any groove...i was lost. maybe a little more fun than whoever was playing behind another money making artist, which had beginning licks played ok but with lousy tone. sorry, that's what i heard. george strait's steel (mike daley (sp?) i presume) was the only real stuff i heard besides the great bumper music. there was a little bit of sweet texturing on steel behind one slower song but can't remember who.

That is what I liked so much about it. It had a nice raw honky tonk feel that had no glitz to it like most of the other steel stuff you hear. Gutsy and lots of groove and blues in it. You have been "ruint" by the sterile steel sounds/feels of late. You know, EVERY note just perfect and the sound dialed in perfect and right there on the charts.....boring. That Eddie Long guy had a great feel that match the whole persona of the guy out front. |

I hope the this years Farm Aid version of Jamie's "Burnin' Down the Roses" is gonna be available sometime. It was better than the CD, and the CD version is pretty darn good (at least to this guy that just got thru burnin' a few....) ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

That's what I liked about it - it sounded like he'd been let loose, somehow. I wasn't thrilled with the singer, but he was okay, I guess. The steel-playing was exciting in a way I can't quite express, except to say that it jumped out at me. Unrestrained, yet still impeccably in tune, with a great blues flavour to it. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I couldn't agree with you more. His playing did seem to jump right out at you. I cant quite put my finger on it but I will say .. I'm now a "Cowboy" Eddie Long fan. |
