Here's a couple of vids courtesy of the Abrigo family of our gig last night at Honey's on the Windward side of Oahu.

I'm using my Rickenbacker 7 stringer.
Our group is called the Koolau Serenaders. We perform only on Fridays from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Hope to see you there if you ever make it to Hawaii.

Aloha,

Derrick Very Happy

Hey Derrick, really great to see you in action and playing one of my favorite steel guitar instrumentals, Na Wai O Na Molokama. That tune was the kickoff tune for the album "Hawaii's Favorite Steel Guitar and Slack Key, Volume 1" (I think it was Vol 1) by the Maile Serenaders, my first "steel" album.

My wife and I were visiting Kauai in 1993 and were in a drugstore (Lion?) in Kapaa, and they had a rack of cassette tapes and I found this and bought it on a whim. This turned out to be a life-changing event for me. As we drove around the island for the week, we'd keep playing it in our rental car and it really got under my skin. I'd never heard "chimes" before or that muted, banjo style of steel guitar. Even today, the "Rogers" style of steel guitar is still my favorite.

A couple years later, after I'd started playing slack key (the Dancing Cat "Masters" CD got me into that!) I revisited that cassette I'd picked up in Kauai a few years back and it something clicked in me that told me "I've got to figure out how to make these sounds!"

And thus the journey began.

Thanks for taking me back!

Very enjoyable Derrick. Nice to actually see you in action. I always enjoyed HONEY'S and all the artists who popped in ... it's THE place for REAL Hawaiian music especially when Eddie Kamae shows up !
